what are the chances of getting something good out of a lockbox? are they worth the money for keys?

Not really. I have opened 70 or 80... not one ship. Also, there is a LOT of stuff that's completely worthless/not worth what you pay. Some decent weapons, but even there it's either Phasers or Disrupters

They're lockboxes. Not being worth it is, essentially, part of the design principle behind them.

That said, while truly awesome drops (e.g. T6 ships) do seem to be so bloody rare legislation requiring the odds of winning to be published would probably kill STO's business model, at least 'this might be fun to try' gear drops seem to be reasonably common here compared to many of other games.

1 ship out of 200.. lobi ship anyhow.. everything else is pure luck..
Baroon Valm Feb 24, 2018 @ 7:51am
and no chances are 0.5% for a ship pop.. so one in 200. 1 in 100 is promo.

The odds are really poor, i got really lucky one time and got a Sphere builder escort my second try.

@calebm the Arhebes destroyer is not the grand prize. Still a ship, but not the grand prize from that box.

A few years back, I came across some posts by someone who was opening hundreds of lockboxes just to calculate the odds. I believe he did so more than once and posted a spreadsheet with the results each time. Can't remember where though. :(

Probably on the forums somewhere. You could easily test the odds yourself. Buy some keys (20 or so), copy your character over to Tribble a bunch of times, open boxes.

I don't think they change the odds on the test server.

You cant test the odds opening only 20 boxes LOL.

Thats why the purpose of those posts, because that guy was opening hundreds of boxes. I know, its not accumulative gambling but still, people would say that just using 20 boxes as example is not enough.

You misunderstood me, idiot. If you had actually read my post, I said to copy your character over to Tribble a bunch of times. Each time that'll give your account 20 keys. So if you copy your character 10 times, that's 200 keys for testing.

Here's my experience.....out of all the lock boxes I have opened....I have gotten only one VR T5 ship and that was when we still had the old ESD....since then I have not won a T6 lockbox ship at all.....and most of my lockbox ships I have obtained are through either trades or from the exchange.....but you should be prepared to grind for ECs, Dilthium, and Zen by redoing old episodes, taking part in every yearly event, playing PVEs, taking part in foundry missions, doing the endeavors, selling junk items, converting dil into zen, using zen to buy keys, certain packs, anything that's tradeable and flip them on the exchange, leveling up certain junk items and flipping them on the exchange for ECs, opening lock boxes once in a while and sell the prizes (you can't sell Lobi Crystals but you can sell certain Lobi store items) creating a foundry mission for others to play (it's an expensive way to earn Dilthium Crystals that people donate but it's worth it if you are willing to put in the time and effort to make it successful) tour the galaxy, doing your daily reps, admiralitys you name it....a lot of ways to do it other than wasting money opening lock boxes...

Well, yeah, the results will get more accurate based on how many times you test. But 200 boxes or so should provide a good idea of how low the actual chances are.
Maj_Cyric Feb 26, 2018 @ 6:27am
Is it worth it? Well 1st if would depend on either your skills at making EC to buy keys or your disposable income...

For me, yes they are worth it, I have both in plenty...

But of all the lock boxes, Hell Boxes are my favorite to open..I've always had the best luck opening them... Out of all the things you could get from them, i'd say only the VIP mining claim is utterly worthless.. R&D boxes are fairly common pulls(as far as lock boxes go), as are single purple Krenim DOFF, Coalition Disruptor Weapon pack (still have around 40 unopened and they can sell for 3mil if you tweak the modifiers), and bonus pools..
You also can get the traits Reciprocity/Tactical Retreat & Coalition Tactics (Both great traits to have)...

Out opening a total of maybe 300 Hell Boxes, I've gotten 3 T6 Krenim Warships, The 1st was back when the Hell Box was released and I sold it for 140mil (random guy PM'ed begging me to sell it to him seconds after getting it), and the other 2 i got within an hour of each other from opening 60 total boxes that day..

Gamble or pay through the nose, that's how good stuff is acquired here.

I have opened 120 of the discovery boxes not got the ship so far. But it is random, you could be lucky - but don't plan on winning a ship.
