Question re: Quantum Torpedoes
Haven't played in several years and am trying to figure out what's changed. I'm playing a new captain to try and figure things out. Having just gotten to commander, i wanted to add a quantum torpedo to my cruiser but can't figure out how/where i can get them. There's not many on exchange and i can't find vendors with them anywhere. It's been so long since i did anything in the game i can't remember how my admiral character got theirs. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Exchange is your best bet, can't remember off hand anything dropping that specifically at that level. Don't thing Quantum is a thing for regular vendors.

Having said that, wouldn't worry about it too much. Anything you buy at Cmdr level is going to obsolete the next day anyway due to extremely fast leveling.

Thanks for the info. I was just looking on my admiral character and discovered an R&D tab. I'm guessing that's another god awful time and mats grind to get anything useful from like Boffs and rep?

Very much this. Really, you'll want to wait until level 50 and the reputation system; some of the reps drop quantum torpedoes like candy.

The R&D system is somewhat take it or leave it, unless you're hell-bent on becoming to-tier endgame dps. In that case, getting beams/cannons up to be able to do your own [Pen] chase is probably a good idea.

The Neutronic Torpedo Launcher was my favorite back when I used to use them years ago..

Also the Kentari Mass-Produced Missile is fun to use for those endeavors needing Kinetic Space Damage... (with the Kinetic cutting beam gets done in zero time)

I play Federation primarily and am a bit of a stickler for the (probably boring and uneffective) tv show/films weapons setup phasers and photons/quantums. I was never interested in the non canon stuff /different coloured stuff.

From what i can gather R&D is the new crafting and about the only way you can target gear drops outside of episode rewards?

Quite ineffective... But play STO however and in whatever ways that you enjoy playing it the most...

If crafting it, make a Mk II one (don't need that high of a R&D level, just buy 2 50 point Catalyst to help roll a purple Mk II Very Rare)...

A very rare Mk II (or white MK I if you use an Omega) has the greatest chance (odds) of crit'ing into the next quality level if you use a purple Experimental tech upgrade (or an Omega) with a blue 2x quality chance accelerator (it's how Epic quality items are made)..

you can get the purple tech upgrade and the accelerator from the exchange or buy a R&D reward boxe from there and hope you get 1 or more accelerator (4 at most) from the R&D box (a single blue 2x Acc and R&D box go for about the same on exchange)...

Quantum is just a subtype of torpedoes like "Photon" or "Chroniton"... there many types of quantum torpedoes, and many sources for those different types. The real question is why you've decided quantum is what you need? In the TV shows they made quantum torpedoes out to be super advanced and powerful weapons... in the MMO they're almost exactly like photon torpedoes but have a very slightly higher damage, and a few second longer recharge.

You can get run-of-the-mill quantum torps off the exchange for dirt cheap. I'm sure you can get them as a mission reward too, though I'd have to hunt through the episodes to find them. I'd suggest that if you just want a good torp on your front arc, you look for something less generic.

Sadly, trying to play this game within "original (TOS/TNG) canon" is virtually impossible. The power creep from the addition of some very non-canon weapons and consoles in the various reputation questlines now forces one to use the newer weapons/consoles to be effective.

Well i am not into elite group content. I just play for the story and to mess around in the ships i enjoy. I typically take long (long, long) breaks and come back to see what's new every couple of years. I don't use any non canon (nor will i ever) stuff - i personally think it's ugly; so hopefully i can still do the content i enjoy well enough with canon stuff.

Unrelated to the torpedoes thing, but why is the game episode thing telling me to go to New Romulus at level 28? I just arrived here and there's nothing for me to do - the wiki says it's a level 50 zone, which means i'd have to grind for 22 levels before i can continue story or am i missing something?

That is about the gateway... and where you start Sphere of Influence (Solanae Dyson Sphere story arc) to gain entry into the Dyson Sphere which L50 is required to enter that area...

*edit*
Cryptic sort of F'ed up the linear story arc chain by adding an "easy button" (each chapter being done in order before starting the next) so new players don't have to "grind" as much to catch up where others who have been playing since 2010 (or whenever) are at in the story chapters..

You're not missing anything except what everyone is missing: Cryptic being competent enough to sufficiently communicate all their most recent changes in-game.

New Romulus is not actually a L50 zone anymore; it basically scales you up to be able to run it. (And it's actually more fun to run like that that during the endless 'you hit New Romulus overleveled and undergeared' era, I must say.) Also, you no longer need to have advanced the reputation in order to have a go at the instances, either.

Also, as a vet running a new character, the game just dumps all the initial missions of all the story arcs you had ever started on any character on you. Which is a plus for doing a new alt that actually exists in the game-'present'.

replay missions that give a quantum as a choice reward, MK is scaled to your current level.

I am the same way. I just made a new character and I'd love to have someone to play with that isn't too hardcore and just is in it for the story and fun.
