New Player Tips?
So, I have not long started my first ever character. I created a TOS character and have done all of those missions, thus I am now in the 25th century. I have obtained my new ship, new uniform and updated all of my crew members uniforms. So, as you can tell, I am very early on in the game.

Now, I'm not stuck or anything, but I just wanted some general spoiler free tips from the veterans of the game. Things I should know about, things I should learn... All of that good stuff. :) Thanks in advance.

Which missions are you referring to? The episodes (storyline missions) or the reputation assignments? Either can get you some handy equipment for both your character and your ships.

Joining Red Alerts and queues for PvE/PvP missions grants you marks (and often dilithium as well) for the aforementioned reputation system.

Then there's the DOFF assignments, patrol missions, the admiralty system, the research system, the minigames, fleets and their management/development, armadas, dilithium mining and seasonal events.

If you've done all of those then you don't need any more advice or tips, I think.

Hummm, pro tips hey? Lets try a few basics...

1) Make sure your ships power setting are set for weapons.
2) Make sure your gear is the best level and quality you can afford as you level up the ranks
3) Refine as much dilithium as you can each day in your inventory
4) Don't do reputation stuff until you're at max rank/level...or you may level up too fast to keep up with new gear needs
5) Once you reach level 60, grind the reputation for extra traits to help you out.
6) End every day with the Tour the Galaxy daily mission...so you can get even better gear and maybe buy some traits from the exchange you'd like. Such as Starship traits you'll be hard-pressed to otherwise get your hands on. Hail Starfleet button (at the bottom of the mini map) and bottom of the Available tab FYI.
7) Stick with phasers for your ships. They're a pretty cool option these days...and very cannon for federation players. Quantum torp on the front until you run across a quantum phase torp on an endgame season mission.
8) You may wanna replay some missions for the item sets bonus'. For example, replay Sunrise to get all the cool quantum phase stuff. Hail Starfleet button and select correct mission to then hit replay button. Just another FYI least you don't know.
9) Some events can help you out later on even if you don't need them right now...so do them. For example, do the Phoenix Prize Pack stuff. If nothing else such tokens can get you handy upgrade stuff for when you reach that part of the endgame. Calendar and the right (changing) tab on the left for this one.
10) Enjoy the fun...

Hope that helps. If you need more, may I suggest checking out the Steam guides. I even wrote one myself for such players entitled; A Beginner's Guide to Playing as the Federation...

Ok where to start?

Well i start with actual stuff and tell you some general stuff after that.

If you press J there is a Calendar. Here you can see all Events going on and coming.
Right now there is a Winter Event and a Special Event where you get a Phoenix Box all 24 hours just for flying to the Drozana Station and hail some Ferengi. In that Phoenix bos there is a Ticket and based on Luck it uncommon, rare, very rare, aso.
The same Ferengi has a shop and he gives you free stuff for those Tickets. (Even Epic Ships)

In the Q's Winter Wonderland there are many minigames to do and also a vendor where you can buy items for the Minigames Events. (Its a Xmas event and goes from the 7. December to 18. January i think) There is also a Special NPC where you can do a mission named "Fastest man on Ice" or something. (I play in germen so i dont know the exact names)
Its a run you can do all 20 Hours and gives you 40 Marks each time you Win. If you got 1000 you win a T6 (Tier 6 is the best actually) Ship. If you dont reach the Marks you can buy some for Lobi Crystals wich are in those Lockboxes you can buy for Zen.

That leads me to the next important and Basic Advice:
You probl. already noticed there are dfferent kinds of "Money" in this game.
Enery Credits are the basic money. With that money you can buy stuff in the Player Marked. Items sold by other players or sold by yourself.

The next importent one is Dilithium. If you open your Inventory there is a rider with the money you get on top if the Invantory. Here you can (And should) Refine your Dilithium. You can refine 8000 per day so dont miss it. You will not be happy if you relize you got 50000 Dilithium ore and you could have refined it already several days but you didnt.. Because only the refined Dilithium is worth something.
With Dilithium you can buy the good stuff. And -very important- you can chance that Dilithium in ZEN.

Zen is the Money you get if you pay real $ For the Game. With Zen you can shop in the Zen Shop. Here you get the best of the best stuff. From Ships over more Bank Space, More Duty officers, Bridge officers, playable Charakters, Outfits, Account bank and Keys for Lockboxes.
Well and many more stuff.

So with Dilithium you can safe real money.

And btw Gold pressed Latinuum is kinda useless.

The next basic thing is. Join a Fleet. If you get a Good one you dont only find some People who can answer your 100 questions you will have, you also get some benefits for beeing in a Guild. You can already get Fleet Marks and Fleet Credits. (Together with Dilithium you can buy Fleet Items and Ships) And as better or "Higher" The guild is as more benefits you get. Like a dicount of Vendors and a Fleet bank and more ways to get Dilithium and alot more.

At the start the Ships change very quick. So dont think too much about your current Ship Build.
But all in all you should stay with one Energy type of damage on your Ship. What kind, Phasor, Disruptor, Antimatter, Plasma aso. is up to you.
As a New player i advice Phasor or Disruptor first. Simply because you get some Quests at level 50+ where you can get a Set for those. One Quest is Sundown and the other one .. sorry cant remember the name now( I think Echoes from the past and some other).. Well the Sundown Quest has some cool Weapons and Consoles that boost Phasor dmg. And all or almost every Quests are replayable. So just play that quest 5 times and you get almost a full Ship Weapon set.
And most important is that those 2 missions give you a Phasor or a Disruptor Torpedo. Normaly you dont get Torpedos with that damage type.
I had the Phasor Set first and it was very nice but now i moved to Disruptor dmg and its awesome.
(But you can get a good Weapon type set for all of them as far i know. Many in my fleet got a Antimatter build)

Btw the common replay i get if i ask about ships that Cannons are the non plus ultra. More presicly (i got always problems with that word. The rest is just lazyness) the Heavy Double Cannons.
Beams are ok.
Double Beams are jus bad Cannons.
Torpedos are ok if its only one (Because all Torpedos share the same Cooldown)
Mines are useless.
Turrets are ok.
Beams and Turrets are ok because you cant have Cannons on the Back Weapon slots of your Ship.

^Well thats not my opinion but its that what all Veterans tell me. I got alot of fun with Mines.
Are they my hardcore DPS Weapon? I got no idea. But i know that some good mines with a Spread Mines Ability can blow a small ship into dust behind you.
And i also got some good Double Beams and single. Cannons have the problems that they only got a 45° fire Arc. If you got a slow ship its hard to have an enemy always right under your Nose. So Beams can fire on enemys who are not infront of you and some dmg is better then no dmg. A VEteran will tell you here that you need a build and Consoles to make your Slow ship so fast you can always turn to target the enemy but as a new Player its not that easy.
Best is to find out for yourself.

Crafting is really cool if you reach level 15 and got all the stuff you need. It takes alot time and some efford but you can build some very cool items you cant get from missions or Quests.
And since it needs time.. better start early. (Like the Dilithium refining)

Make your 20 Doff (Duty officers) missions every time they aviable. They give you items, credits, Dilithium, Character Exp and exp in different under Cathegories. Diplomancy, Trade, Intel, Operations, Medicine aso. If you reach a higher level in one of those you get a new better Doff for free. First Green ones, later Blue ones and at the end Purple ones.
If you miss a Special Doff for missions you can buy it in the Player Market. (The Excange?)
Greens for 20k-30k Energy Credits. (Buy the ones for your Faction. Do not buy Klingon Doffs if you are a Fed)
And if you reach the maximum. I think its 100 Doffs you can have without you buy more space for Zen, you can go to the Academy on Earth and change 5 white for one green, 5 Green for 1 Blue aso.
Its alot better then deleting them to make space for better ones.

Well thats all for now. I hope i could help you a bit.

ok in addition to what ve been said

energy weapons loose dmg over range
so get close (beams <1km canons <2km)

try to only shoot ONE shild facing so u only combat one shild reg

i find it easy to play with normal beam arrays and fly broadside

this way u can turn 180° and show the enemy ur other side when shilds r down and still have all wpns shooting

and if u havnt found a nice fleet yet

I can recommand the one i am in

international layed back social fleet with TS³ server

Thank you all very much! This information has been very valuable to me and I'm sure I'll be referring back to this post when I want to check these facts over. Thank you all again, so much! :)

Just started playing (maybe) STO, after years away, and just made level 51, yet am so lost.

Trying to remember, how this game works, and how to go about it, is so daunting....
(which keeps me out of the game)

@Vosoros tip ... Make sure your ships power setting are set for weapons
Is a big help , as my guns should work now ..doh! :)

Maybe STO should have a 'recap' mission tutorial, for returning players, that covers the 'how' 'what' and 'do', up to your current level.

The best pro tip I can given any returning player to Star Trek Online is do a number of STF's (PvE queues in newbies terms) to help shake the rust off yourself. Think of them as shakedown cruises to make sure you and your ship are working harmoniously.

Alternatively, you could also just fly around sector space and toward some random system to see if you can do a patrol. And maybe even respond to a few red alerts in sector space too.

Whatever helps give you a little time to remember what's what and how you'd set your starship up to work before you settle back in to enjoy what's new...

I played on Game release and then again on Romulan release and always when i come back after years im totally lost and cant archieve a thing.

What i do is to play a low level Char first. Level 20 or 40. They have very few Abilitys and not a Specialized Super Ship. So its really easy to get into it.

Once i played about 10 levels i can log on my big characters and learn the rest. :)

But you still learn something new every day. This game is more complex then you think. There are only 3 Torpedos with Set dmg is something i learned yesterday. I was sure there are weapons for all kind of Weaponenergy Dmg.
So im happy i got the Disruptor Torpedo for my Disruptor set.
And thats also the reason why so many people did buy the Phoenix Box Torpedo even if he was only blue. Its the only of its kind.

So much changes as the game does over the years...

My old intrepid class starship design (when Delta Rising was the newest season) made good use of Tetryon Beam Arrays and the Neutronium Torpedo combined with the Bio-Neural Gel Packs from the Delta Reputation. Atop of that my 2 piece long range science vessel set was used for a very Intrepid class feel. The set consisted of; the Nadeon Detonator from the T4 Long Range Science Vessel Refit from the C-Store and the Ablative Generator from the T5 Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit from the C-Store.

Nowadays I've taken that drain design back to a more canon style of phasers thanks to the Quantum Phase Torpedo, Beam Array and Convertor from Sunrise in the Future Proof season. And when Beyond the Nexus launched I combined a firing cycle hast design atop of that. Even adding the Pilfered Power starship trait from the Exchange to make my Gravity Well III and Tractor Beam II bridge officer powers feed into that even more. Matter of fact, I have an active space duty officer making my tractor beam drain shields too.

But yeah...I try to adapt as the times change whilst staying true to my shield drain design I happened upon so long ago when I first began playing...
