Laptop specs? Any launcher options used? Specific error message?

I'm starting to think it's a Windows10 problem....I have DirectX 12 but when I try to install STO I get a DirectX error.

change STO launcher graphic display to DX 9, STO does NOT work with DX 10, 11, 12

Works fine for me on Win10/DX11.

Did not used to be so though, before the lighting upgrade a few monts back had to use DX9 as DX11 crashed a lot.

So try different DX settings, seems to be vary a lot depending on hardware what works.

ok - it also looks like I somehow log permissions to the Steam folder....I've reinstalled so we'll see how this goes...I'll keep the DirectX 9 thing in mind...that's a good tip

Ok - so I got it back to where it'll launch, but the only screen I get is the loading screen for Agents of Yesterday and the theme music, but it never progresses past that point....

How would I force this thing to launch in DirectX 9? I don't see an option anywhere....

And I crashed the program (after the 3rd iteration of the theme song) and now no sound is playing at all....thinking I may be done with STO entirely....

Change the direct X version used for you by entering the command line of the launcher options; -d3d9

I do appreciate the response. I tried that without any change. I launch it, it gives me the loading screen and it just sits here...I don't have sound or anything. I'm uninstalling this POS and the $120 they got out of me will just be a sunk cost I guess....bummer....this game was fun at times....

Could you please specify the exact error description? That might help us folks. Also please run DXDIAG.EXE ... to check your installed DirectX integration verification.

Just for information reasons: The DX9 command line in starter could help so far, but DX9 support will be dropped by Cryptic in March '17 anyway (see the command prompt when starting STO and getting that note. So no fuzz on trying THAT again - unless you want to have to sort out the same problem next year ...

The minimum requirements of this game aren't all that great & problems like this are easily searchable on google why don't you just try downloading driver booster 3 which will update everything on your laptop and then download display driver uninstaller from wagnardsoft.com but before you do that download the latest display drivers from your manufacturer anyway is it an intel or amd laptop probably intel where you have integrated graphics well if it's a core i5 it should work also how much memory is in your laptop 4gb. 8gb 16gb what?

A distinct lack of tech specs won't help you maybe if you add more RAM to your laptop because maybe the on-chip gpu on an intel machine shares system memory so if you've only got 4gb memory then you're really pushing the edge since windows alone likes 8gb these days & then if you're sharing it with your gpu it might be below spec so just add another 8gb and probably that would be it, once you've rulied out old drivers but then maybe you have a radeon so just head on over to amd.com and get the latest drivers from them and install them once you've cleaned the system with display driver uninstaller could be anything at this point until we know more.

i totaly agree DELL does not play games!! It's a business computer (ONLY) it does simple things and game like solitaire or if your lucky it may play chess

I don't think it's a DELL problem, I think it's actually a steam client problem.

I've lost rights to several of the Steam directories for other games, so when they try to update, I lose directory rights to them (orphaned).

I've been playing on Dells for literally over a decade now and never had any issues. I'm not exactly a hardcore gamer and I really don't have the time to be one.
