All the heavy/experimental weapons were intended to be non-boostable by normal energy consoles.

That was the intent, not sure if it's true of some newer experimental weapons.

what exp weapon would be best suited for an escort with all AP cannons in front and AP turrets in back?

arguably, any of them. I'm not sure which of the heavy weapons is at the top of the charts now.

Personally, since they drain 10 power per shot (well, the free one does, not sure about the others) and are unboostable, I see very little point in actually using them.

I don't think all of them use weapon power, though I don't have all of them so I can't be certain. The dual warhead launcher fires projectiles not energy weapons, so it may cost nothing...

The proton charge launcher and the slamshot artillery are both useful, and I quite enjoy the rail gun. Slamshot has terrible accuracy, but it debuffs the target's damage resistance... proton charges deal (unsurprisingly) proton damage... and they work as both projectiles and mines (if there's nobody to hit they just... hang out and attack people who come into range).

I quite like experimental weapons... they're not the centerpoint of any build though.
