Data Guzziler
Tthis game eats through Data like nothing i have experianced in 20 years online . 500 megabites in a 5 hour session last night and i have been watching closely for about 3 weeks and its consistantley bad
so unless you have wads of cash to throw at your mobile isp for data add ons or lucky enough to have home unlimited broadband this game is not for you
i love the game but its got serious network issues
and before you say it . the streaming client is set to on demand off . so game is fully installed and patched

I mean you're communicationg information with literally hundreds of people as you connect and disconnect to them in servers. Every time you go in you pull data and pictures from everyone. 500mb isn't that bad when you think about how much stuff is loaded and connected to on this game.

im sorry snake but no . i play other games online just as complex and the data useage is trivial in comparison , theres something wrong . im not trying to hate on the game . just putting a fact out there

The average data bandwith for MMOs, such as WoW is around 100-200mb of data every hour. So yes. You're experiencing average data usage. Playing a game online is different from an MMO. With call of duty you're connecting with maybe 50 people every 15 minutes and then you're in that little data "hole" with them. With STO, you're constantly connecting to new players in the game, through things such as the exchange or in-game. That's how MMOs work. STO might be a crappy game when it comes to performance and stuff, but it's not a data eater.

If you have bad connection or pay for slow internet speed, you might have a problem with the game trying to reconnect and load multiple things multiple times. That's the only reason I could think of that you think those might be high numbers.

i have played world of warcraft and monitered it as i played and again its data usage is trivial compared to STO . i will repeat im not hating on the game but being in denial that the games has heavy data useage can only result in the developers never looking into to issue and never implementing a fix if atall possible . its just wrong to try wall paper over cracks if theres an underlaying problem that needs addressed . maybe the can never fix it , but people need to know so they can use there best judgment if this game is something they can play

Again, it's your internet. From what I'm reading, 100-200 is the average per hour for WoW. What are you using to monitor?
Kegbelly Aug 3, 2017 @ 12:42am
its a tool my isp provides so i can see exactley how much data im using and whether or not i need to get offline for awile

snake people need to be aware . maybe its normal i dont know but when i play swtor i dont use nearly as much . i want to enjoy this game and i would like it to be atleast looked looked at to see if there is anything that can be done . maybe im just SOL but it will never get a sniff of attention if its not recognised as being heavy. again not hating . just saying people need to understand

We understand, and I'm simply saying your internet must be wonky. I've never had any data problems with STO, and I've monitored mine as well. If you're doing single player missions you can expect around 50MB an hour. If you're doing STFs or constantly hanging around ESD, then yes, you'll get 100MB an hour.

Here's what most people are saying about data usage on the STO reddit;

"I think the most I ever used in a day of playing STO was like 800mb, and that was a 12 hour+ gaming session" -DraumrKopa

"Only uses a small amount (maybe 100MB every couple hours) " -Audigex

"This answer is going to vary a lot depending on what you do. Lets say you do CE a lot; that averages about 75kb/s for me after the recent update and could tear through your data plan quickly." -Body_surfer

"I had my internet go out awhile back so I tethered to my cell phone for a week. If I remember right it was something like 200-300 MB an evening. Actual gameplay doesn't take a huge amount of bandwidth, maybe like 20-60 kBps, but there is a bit more that happens during map and character change." -SquirrleyTunic

"When I played every day for several hours at a shot, it only added a few hundred MB per day." -NauticalBustard

STO has crappy optimization, but it's not a data hog. At least compared to WoW or any other major MMO that has a ton of players and lots of connection needed.

im done . i have put it out there what i seee going on with my own moniter and its not good reading . i kinda knew you would post a load of quotes but i can only go with my own experiance like everyone should
ShakeAndBakee Aug 3, 2017 @ 1:11am
I'm not saying that the quotes are invalidating your claim. I'm simply saying your whole, "this game is a data guzzler!!" is simply false. It's something on YOUR end. Not the game's fault.

Just trying to help you troubleshoot, because at least if it's on your end it's probably something you can fix.

hehe home unlimited broadband if i could would fix it np =)

The game has "on demand" patching. If you can connect to a unlimited internet for a bit, then disable it, it should help.
