- Right-lick the item you want to upgrade and hit "upgrade item".
- Then you get the upgrade screen again, only this time, it should show your item. Next to it, put in the upgrade kit.
- Hit apply.
- Either use more upgrade kits (if you have any) or leave the screen after the item was claimed back. It will tell you how many points it needs to upgrade and how much dilithium will be used up each time.
A few words of wisdom/caution however:
1. Basic tech upgrade kits kind of suck. Sure, they cost the least amount of dilithium to apply, BUT they cost more in the long run compared to improved/superior ones, which give a ton more points for a higher dilithium cost. If you can, ALWAYS use the high quality ones. Basic ones are more or less useless and pure beginner's traps. Superior Tech Upgrades come from either your R&D or from the exchange. Their prices have become quite reasonable actually and shouldn't break your bank.
2. Everytime an item increases in rank via upgrading (for ex. mk II to mk III), there may be a slight, super tiny, chance of a quality increase for said item as well. So an uncommon mk II could turn into a rare mk III. Once an item hits mk XIV, you can keep using upgrades until eventually an item hits epic quality. But that takes A LOT more dlithium than its worth IMO.
3. Featured episodes offer weekly rewards. One of those is a tech upgrade giving 20K points that costs nothing to use. Romulan Republic Admiralty campaign gives you four 25K tech upgrades every time you complete the tour of duty chain for it. This takes time, but comes in handy. These upgrades kits work on any item too, no restrictions!
4. Look for Upgrade weekends on the calender before upgrading. During those, ALL tech upgrades give twice as many points. If you hoard your stuff until then, it can really save a ton of dilithium!
5. Finally, not all tech upgrades work with every item. Check the upgrade kit to see what it actually works on (cannons, projectile, ground, etc...).
Hope that helps!
