What are the obvious reasons? I am missing something here. Sorry.
About a way to "value Dilithium":
If I had the choice to do a mission which gives me one ore or one which gives me one Energy Credit, which should I do?
Since a key costs 125 zen, that's about 40,000 EC per zen.
If you divide that by 200 dil per zen, then 200 EC for 1 Dilithium comes out as the answer.
Edit: obviously my math is generalized, but the logic is sound.
(Price of key on exchange) / (cost of key in zen in the C-store)(current dilithium-zen exchange rate).
Honestly, considering the fact that dil's only worth comes from it being exchangeable for the IRL money currency, it's not too hard to see that it has little to nil value.
DILITHIUM is the MOST PRIZED RESOURCE. It's used in EVERYTHING and can be converted to ANYTHING. The only way to get more dilithium is have more characters refining per day or real life money. EC is common and can be had from almost anything, do not over value it. Dilithium is the only currency that can't be obtained reliably and is the only currency that feeds upgrading gear which is the cornerstone of the "power creep." Hoard dilithium, spend EC.
Sure, EC can get you rare ships and epic gear but only if you want to be a basic ♥♥♥♥♥. The good ♥♥♥♥ comes from zen! Or expert use of dilithium to make epic gear to sell for hoards of EC!
