As for swords, there's a handful that you can get normally, which are the Lirpa and the Bat'leth. You can find Tsunkatse Falchion also as random drops for loot during ground missions. The big blue sword you saw was a Na'Kuhl Assassin Plasma Blade. It can be acquired from the Lobi store for, I believe, 50 lobi.
Melee may not be completely optimal to charge in from any range or in any situation, but the potential spike damage means you can keep a sword at your side and partake in some close combat should the opportunity arise without necessarily being a burden. And, of course, swords are completely unaffected by Delegated Devastation, allowing you to strike foes down without impediment while your team reaps a substantial damage boost.
"Any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed." -Jack Churchill
Also worth noting is the Commando line of specilization skills, particularly the Juggernaut section. Being able to knock down an opponent by sprinting into them can potentially guarantee landing a three hit combo for the expose and exploit in quick order. Follow Through or Follow Up, whatever it's called, that grants added melee damage after sprinting can also help.
Well, gotta head off so I won't be able to respond until much later today. Happy fencing.
Shooter mode and at least a combo to play with, though, kind of sets it apart from other tab-target auto-attack MMOs. Opinions differ person by person, but melee here is actually why I still bother. Of course it's not Mount & Blade: Warband, not by a long shot, but melee's only one part of the formula here. It's a bit of fun depending on who you are, and if you don't like melee that's fine. I'm finding that if something's already close-up, I can hack it apart about as quickly as I can blast it with my minigun. Both weapons are upgraded to Mk. XIV. It's especially useful for putting down those Voth engineers quickly at the omega particle silos.
I don't want to try and convince you to use melee or that it's even optimal, just why I use it, and why someone else might find it fun as well.
Thus I've not been trying too hard to blitz through any form of grinding, so I suppose trying to get through marks as quickly as possible hasn't been something I've considered.
I had a gun and sword on me when I played. The gun for far, the sword for close.
To make melee worth it, you have to put in too much and it takes from better traits for survivability. Glass cannon? Glass sword. You'll need doffs, ground traits, armor sets to compliment it, and abilities that support it. In the end, I kept a quarter of its power for Borg or when ♥♥♥♥ got too close. Even then, the unhinged running away shooting always did better.
