Combat pets are mostly acquired from special requisiton packs. The Holographic Combat Drone, the Horta, etc.

As for swords, there's a handful that you can get normally, which are the Lirpa and the Bat'leth. You can find Tsunkatse Falchion also as random drops for loot during ground missions. The big blue sword you saw was a Na'Kuhl Assassin Plasma Blade. It can be acquired from the Lobi store for, I believe, 50 lobi.

thank you so much for the help:colonylove::steamhappy:
If you get a xindi kit with expose chance off the exchange and the lucky trait together then you can, with a sword type melee weapon such as the falchion or nausicaan tegolar sword, fairly reliably expose with the first two hits of a combo and then exploit with the third and final hit, dealing some strong damage right through shields. And, of course, the expose chance is pretty helpful in ranged combat as well since it lets you or a teammate land what is effectively a forced crit with an exploit attack. Especially gratifying when used in tandem with a bridge officer's Lunge attack, resulting in vaporizing drop kicks.

Melee may not be completely optimal to charge in from any range or in any situation, but the potential spike damage means you can keep a sword at your side and partake in some close combat should the opportunity arise without necessarily being a burden. And, of course, swords are completely unaffected by Delegated Devastation, allowing you to strike foes down without impediment while your team reaps a substantial damage boost.

Dyson battle zone? You mean the ground zone in the sphere with the dinosaurs? I melee there all the time no problem. As an Engineer, no less. Same with the Kobali zone, though it's a little more difficult there. It really is all in the expose build, though. Without stacking expose chance, I wouldn't be able to do nearly as much damage as I do now.

Also worth noting is the Commando line of specilization skills, particularly the Juggernaut section. Being able to knock down an opponent by sprinting into them can potentially guarantee landing a three hit combo for the expose and exploit in quick order. Follow Through or Follow Up, whatever it's called, that grants added melee damage after sprinting can also help.

Well, gotta head off so I won't be able to respond until much later today. Happy fencing.

From Mount & Blade: Warband here. Now that's a melee system. Of course there's not "dozens" of combos here, not anywhere close to it, nor is it by any means the best melee system in a game. I've only said there's a combo, one combo, and it works well with an expose set up. I've carried my sword into elite queues and it's workable without hypos, but not by itself. Melee's situational and a bit of fun to dive into.

Shooter mode and at least a combo to play with, though, kind of sets it apart from other tab-target auto-attack MMOs. Opinions differ person by person, but melee here is actually why I still bother. Of course it's not Mount & Blade: Warband, not by a long shot, but melee's only one part of the formula here. It's a bit of fun depending on who you are, and if you don't like melee that's fine. I'm finding that if something's already close-up, I can hack it apart about as quickly as I can blast it with my minigun. Both weapons are upgraded to Mk. XIV. It's especially useful for putting down those Voth engineers quickly at the omega particle silos.

I don't want to try and convince you to use melee or that it's even optimal, just why I use it, and why someone else might find it fun as well.

I've logged 1,000 hours in the game somehow. That amount of time definitely takes its toll and I don't play too often anymore, but when I do grinding out marks is hardly on my mind. It never really was. Rep marks just happened while I played the game. I suppose I'm different in that the grind hasn't compelled me so if I don't feel like chatting with some ex-City of Heroes players or swording a few dinosaurs, I just don't log on. Now I just mess around, join queues, stalk the battle zones, and get in (sword) fights. And chat.

Thus I've not been trying too hard to blitz through any form of grinding, so I suppose trying to get through marks as quickly as possible hasn't been something I've considered.

Erm, melee is completely useless in end-game content. Its a fact like a temple. Going into the dyson battlezone, or kobali prime (specially kobali), to give you some examples is a total suicide using melee combat lol. Also, tedious as hell. Using hypos all the time, trying to get closer to all the enemies all the time to be able to do something, etc, etc.. in other games could work, in STO never did. And i would love melee combat, but not in STO.

I had a gun and sword on me when I played. The gun for far, the sword for close.
To make melee worth it, you have to put in too much and it takes from better traits for survivability. Glass cannon? Glass sword. You'll need doffs, ground traits, armor sets to compliment it, and abilities that support it. In the end, I kept a quarter of its power for Borg or when ♥♥♥♥ got too close. Even then, the unhinged running away shooting always did better.

Melee ONLY is very stupid but a little melee in a character with great long range has duality when paired with other players. I would occasionally use my sword to blaze through Borg like they were Cotten candy in a pissing contest or when enemies turned their back. I almost managed to beat the infamous "Rueben" 12-15 (he used a cheap move near the end) by catching him close and doing a stun, swirl, back hack crit like a fifth horseman of the apocalypse. Sure, long range wins, ask turn of the century Japan, but a sword has uses if planned accordingly. I mean, who the ♥♥♥♥ needs two guns? Hell, I loved the Ferengi whip for the longest tim! It went great with the crystal energy sword.
