Poorly Cloned Heroes are not easy if you are the proper level, but not too bad either. I think they start on level 2 but they are level 3 creatures (kind of like how you can sometimes find zombies on level 1, but they become more common on level 2). The Evil Clones are not standard creatures. I THINK you can only find them in wizardlands, and only if you pull the wrong lever. In other words, you aren't going to just randomly run into them. The trapped levers are easily identifiable because they are always in the same location in the same room type.
Evil Clones are meant to be a trap. Generally speaking, you can encounter them in a level 1 or level 15 wizardland and anywhere in between, and they are always the same strength regardless (only modified by the difficulty level).
Total Stats (from Dredmorpedia):
[Piercing Damage] 5 [Slashing Damage] 20 [Acidic Damage] 5
[Acidic Resistance] 10
[Burliness] 50 [Sagacity] 30 [Nimbleness] 40 [Caddishness] 60 [Stubborness] 50 [Savvy] 40
[Crit] 33 [Dodge] 45 [Armour Absorption] 10 [Life] 165 [Mana] 60 [Melee Power] 15 [Magic Power] 15 [Haywire] 20 [Block] 16 [Counter] 16 [Enemy Dodge Reduction] 13 [Magic Resistance] 25 [Sneakiness] 40
If you insist on pulling every lever, then you'll definitely find them. If you can't handle them, just run towards the exit portal (The levels are pretty linear and they don't have ranged attacks so unless you box yourself into a corner, or get blocked by other creatures, you should be fine). Generally, you probably can even manage to pick up all the loot as you leave (various skills and items can help with that). As you can see from the stats above, they have good acid resistance, so you don't want to use those kinds of attacks. If your armor is good enough (best if you also have some acid resist yourself) then you really can melee them. Looking at their damage, you should have a decent idea of what your armor and/or HP should be before you should even consider getting into melee with them. It's really not extreme, but you probably won't be ready until you are around level 10 to 15 or so (depending on luck, of course).
I know this is super old but they aren't just from pulling levers. I had one spawn from a side quest, it was a named monster like "Twyn the Mountain of Holidays" but when you moused over it it says "evil clone" and has the sprite of a clone.
They are very annoying.
