Going melee against dredmor is something no one wants to do especially if they have no idea what to do. The amount of damage he can do in melee is absurd. His bolt as you witnessed already is quite dangerous too but he doesn't do that as often as you would think. So going ranged against him is possibly the best way to deal with it. In addition, some of the most damaging attacks to take advantage of comes from ranged.
Anyway, hope you can find another build and continue to play the game even after you've beaten it. There are so many classes and combinations you can choose which gives it so much replayability .
And with the supposedly upcoming update with the game we should expect some kind of revival... but let's just hope that's true anyway.
Unarmed (to carry shields/orbs etc)
Artful Dodger (mostly just for knightly leap but I avoided heavy armor to get the most out of it)
Armorer (kicking things takes forever so you will end up getting hit)
Viking (not a great choice but it had it's moments in the early floors)
Shield (I only upgraded this once, considered carrying double orbs multiple times)
Promethean Magic (all the spells are good and summons are op)
Perception (avoid traps, lost too many good runs to them lol)
Basically just carrying the best orbs and a mirror shield, kicking everything to death while my summons act as a meatshield. It was really simple, but that makes it idiot proof which is perfect for me.
I really am hoping for Dredmor 2 related news too. All this developer teasing is driving me mad. This i a really great game and I won't be done with it just yet, but we're all ready for a new breath of life for Dredmor.
I would like to try a pure warrior, no magic build; I used to love the whole clockwork knight thing. Like you said, I don't see a good way to melee dredmor to death unless you abuse stuns/knockback and have a steady supply of meat shields. Could be fun, but it's too tempting to save those clockwork sawblades and bolts of mass destruction for the end.
But, the replay-ability is not an issue, since Im currently on my 5th build (stopped previous ones mid game), however I would not try with random set of them yet, since this game seems very very easy, until you are dead in 3 hits because of complacency.
