Dungeons of Dredmor

What am I even meant to do?
All that's happening is I'm going into 'a strange portal' and then into the pocket dimension. But then the portal in there takes me to diggle hell and I instantly die. What do?

The portal in your pocket dimension requires a proper code, and if you do not type in a proper code, it will ALWAYS bring you to Diggle Hell (fun place, and the location of several achievements if you are strong enough to survive it). If you do enter a proper code, the portal will bring you to a Wizardland corresponding to that code.

Proper codes can be gotten in 2 ways. First, you'll notice around the dungeon that there is grafitti scattered about on walls. Second, you can get codes from other players. Type the code in when you activate the portal -- if you type it in exactly correct, you'll find a wizardland corresponding to the level of the dungeon from where the code was obtained.

For example, if you use a code that was found on level 15 of the dungeon, then you'll be sent to a wizardland with monsters appropriate for level 15, regardless of what level you are.

Every wizardland has an exit portal. Once you complete a wizardland by using that portal, you won't be able to use that code again (barring an explot which I won't share).

Note that codes correspond to very specific wizardlands BUT those wizardlands will vary based on what difficulty level you are playing on. Wizardland A on Dwarven Moderation can be entirely different from Wizardland A on Going Rogue. The specific monsters can vary, as well. I've heard conflicting reports on loot variations, but the expectation is that if a specific Dungeonland for a specific difficulty has a really good artifact, it will always have a really good artifact (not with the exact same stats though).

Yeah I can;t seem to find graffiti on the stage I'm on, I've been through it like 3 times so I'm fairly sure there isn't a code on the walls. Is it possible to leave a level without going through a portal? If that makes sense..

One or both of us are probably confused. I'm using the word portal in a rather loose way. Let me explain:
1. Satanic Displacement Glyph -- this kind of portal will teleport you to a corresponding portal on the same dungeon level or wizardland. The one in the final room of a wizardland is also the exit portal -- it looks exactly like a Satanic Displacement Glyph, only it teleports you back to the dungeon level you started on.
2. Mysterious Portal -- this portal has a unique look, different from the Glyph. It will bring you to a mysterious dimension, which may contain monsters from ANY level of the dungeon. The upside is that it sometimes (though not always) can contain 1 or more highish level artifact(s). There will be a second Mysterious Portal in the final room of the Mysterious Dimension that will allow you to exit back to the regular dungeon.
3. Wizardland Portal -- the doorway-looking object by the north wall of your pocket dimension can take you to a wizardland (which I explained above). If you type in a proper wizardland code, the portal turns black. If you step through it, you will go to a wizardland. If you type in an improper code, the portal turns red. If you step through a red portal, you go to Diggle Hell. If you type in a code for a wizardland that you've previously completed, the portal will not open at all. You do NOT have to walk through the portal if you activate it, so if you make a typing error, you have a chance to correct it before you are screwed (sent to Diggle Hell).

Note also that Diggle Hell will have an exit portal that looks like (I believe) a Satanic Displacement Glyph.

The Glyphs and portals can be displaced by various spells and abilities, and they can spawn under or behind objects or other hard to see locations and therefore can be obscured from view. Also keep in mind that using click to walk can often lead you to enter a mysterious dimension or become displaced as they are not considered obstacles (unlike traps, bookcases, etc.). There's a weird phenomenon where if a Satanic Displacement Glyph is moved, that if you teleport to it, you actually teleport to where it used to be. Also, you can have one displaced to be on top of another which causes only the top one of them to function.

If it helps, the portal I walk on to go to the pockett dimension is called a 'strange portal'

There's a control on the UI, not on the map, that gets added once you find the Wizard Key. That's the only way of entering the Pocket Dimension from the dungeon. So now I'm really confused.

Sorry made an error above because I edited too much too quickly and left an incorrect reference. The portal in the final room of the wizardland returns you to your pocket dimension -- is that what you are talking about?

Correct.

So are you saying that the final portal in the wizardland teleports you to Diggle Hell?

No I;m saying that when I go through the portal in the pocket dimension, I go to Diggle Hell as I don;t have a code..
Haldurson Jan 25, 2014 @ 1:55pm
So don't go through the portal if you don't have a code. The codes are found randomly throughout the normal dungeon. They aren't terribly rare, but you won't find them everywhere.

Here's a couple of links you can use if you are having problems finding codes:

Late on this, but Bort if you go into your pocket dimenson, you can leave by clicking on the pocket dimension icon again, you don't HAVE to go through that portal that takes you to diggle hell.
