I would recommend rows of things. I used lots of wands and so keeping gems in a row along the wall was a must, and I would turn off auto-looting gems and whatnot so that once in the pocket dimension I wouldn't accidentally loot my rows away.
What you do and don't want to keep will always be build dependent, and some abilities render certain skills moot (alchemy is nearly useless with Paranormal Investigator).
Auto looting is the best thing as far as speeding up what you grab, but the truth is patience will be you friend with this game every time, as impatience will likely lead to a rash decision and abrupt death.
Absolutely pick your style and stay committed. The best way to win outside of cheesing is to stick to your initial plan.
