Dungeons of Dredmor

Dungeons of Dredmor

Similar games?
I got the itch to play Dredmor again recently, but much to my sadness, it glitches out on my new computer. So I thought I'd ask this lovely (and surprisingly active) community for help finding similar turn-based RPGs.
I've been a big fan of Tales of Maj'Eyal for a long time (700+ hours played), but it's complicated and can be frustrating when you just want something quirky and fun. Dungeonmans was good, but a bit *too* simple. Anyone know of a sweet-spot RPG with customizable classes that's neither as simple as Dungeonmans nor as complex as ToME or Nethack?

Edit: Preferably with diverse wizard skills!

Check out Tangledeep. It's a rather simple and quick to get used to roguelike, but I think it has enough stuff to feel like it's not lacking. Nowhere near as much as ToME though, but that shouldn't be a surprise given that ToME has been in development for like 10 years.

You can combine classes by respeccing to another class while keeping skills you learned from previous one(s) (you learn skills by spending points you accumulate from leveling with that class). However each class has three traits that can't carry over, so you will have to plan out which class you actually want to use in the end after you pick up skills you want from other classes.

It's pretty well balanced, so it might feel a bit easy for experienced roguelike players though, at least until you get to new game plus and then the savage run that comes after that.

Ah, that's a great suggestion! I've actually played Tangledeep before, but it's been a while. Perhaps it's time to play again and try a different job combination.

If you want to try something more in a science fiction vein, I recommend Sword of the Stars: The Pit. They are also releasing a board game version of it (maybe early 2020, if we're lucky). It's a roguelike set in the universe of the 4X game, Sword of the Stars. It has a relatively deep crafting system, if you like that sort of thing (which I do). It's quite a bit more challenging than Dredmor.

Rogue Wizards immediately came to mind when I read wizard skills.

Unfortunately, it definitely doesn't meet your complexity sweet spot requirement.

I wouldn't use the term more challenging, I'd say the game is just unfair because it's too RNG reliant.

That being said, aside from unfairness I quite like the game and have actually bought all of the DLC's for it. If the game was more balanced and wasn't so reliant on RNG (food, ammo types) it would probably be one of my most favorite roguelikes out there.

So I find it hard to recommend to people. Basically you want a cool, interesting roguelike that you'll probably never win then The Pit is a great choice, if you prefer more balanced roguelikes then stay away though.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll take a look at both of them.

A really cool roguelike you could check out that I consider to be similar Dredmor in terms of complexity is Powder. It's free an available on many platforms!

Looks like fun! I'm surprised I haven't heard of it before.

I wish there was a sequel to this, it's too bad the studio shut down. The game has an amazing artstyle, music, items and just the entire world is great. As much as i've tried so many other roguelikes and love a lot of them, nothing beats DoD for me.

Ooh, looks nice. I'll try the prologue and see how it goes. Thanks!

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is pretty damn good too. Not as nethack as nethack, nice variety of of cool and very unusual races. Seriously you can play normal things like humans orcs, minotaurs ect but you can also play as a house cat, mana shielded vine creature, or an octopus! Crazy stuff and has a lot of fun and interesting magic schools and god abilities. Love the game.

Seconded, Dungeon Crawl is really nice, always in development (since open source + community based & competitive, if you want it to). Although a round of DCSS may take between half an hour up to infinity /well, like, 15-30hr runs are not unusual, depending on proficiency with autotab tactics).

For a fast-to-enjoy adventure with some challenge in it I recommend >>Desktop Dungeons<< (Enhanced Edition). It is not a roguelike but more of a puzzlegame with lots roguelike influences, a round usually takes me between 10 minutes and 2 hours at max.
The community is still involved in making some enormous content mod with a priority on difficulty/trickyness, and it already has hundreds of hours of unlockable content (although also randomly generated dungeons) before the mod.
it is a cheap game, and if you first want to try the concept, you can do so for >>0 $$$<<, since the developers always kept the Alpha of the game for downloading on their website (mind you tho, it is more like two different games besides the base mechanics)

There's a really streamlined roguelike that I recommend. It's more similar to Rogue than to Dredmor, but it's still worth checking out: Brogue https://sites.google.com/site/broguegame/home

Thank you! I'll be sure to check them out.
