why can't I talk in zone chat
newly created accounts cant use chat?

Not until I think it's 20 hours of play for the account. I know it's time gated until they can but not sure on the number of hours needed.

And that's for zone chat. I think they can use Local.

When CO became Free For All it kinda had buncha impatient trolls. So it kinda became the trick to get the trolls more patient before seeing if they could troll. Unfortunately it kinda backfired on really good players.

Sometimes when I make a new character, the restriction also applies to me even if I have a lot of characters!

It was more to curb the gold sellers from making a new account and spamming the gold selling. Although anyone who needs to buy gold in a Cryptic game really needs to find another thing to do. Gaining gold in all Cryptic games has been so easy going all the way back to CoX.

Just the other day someone goes on zone wanting to buy 50 keys. Everyone talked about how they hoped he didn't just went and buy gold and he replied with. "That's more effort then making it myself"
And everyone heartidly laughed.

That is funny. But a lot of times seeing how crooked alot of those sites are, he could be right. ;)

Update! In order to talk in zone chat, you need to verify your account by email!
It's totally NOT 20 hours - at least not anymore! I just played for a LOT more than 20 hours and I got to level 15 now and it still didn't work! But as soon as I verified my email address and logged back in it worked!
