Question about Gaul Ambush (spoiler)

Ambushed in the cave, I beat the attackers. I am aware that losing gets you some extra scene with Lurco coming to save you. Does Lurco saving me have an effect on choices or dialogue later in the game? Or can I safely just watch lurco saving the player on youtube and continue on with the game no problem

No, not really. If you can't thwart the ambush then you have to suffer the humiliation of having Lurco coming to save you. His praetorians suggest leaving you to die but Lurco basically comments that he wishes you live until he has no more use of you. You and your praetorians wonder why they came to your rescue, their legion finds this humourous and your own legion starts wondering if they were wrong in their assessment of Lurco. It will also give Lurco the opportunity to bolster his reputation.

Not giving Lurco any ammunition is much better alternative to giving him the satisfaction of saving our hide.

As above, but also keep in mind you kill A LOT of gauls in that ambush aside from the chieftain who gets you a unique spear.

There are a least 5 unique weapons/armor that are entirely random drops including 2 that are absolutely excellent: Armor of Crassus and Armor of Mars

in any battle you should seek to kill as many enemies as possible to increase the chance of random drops. And even if you don't get anything unique the more enemies you kill the bigger the chance of them dropping pristine quality equipment which you might be able to use on your random/unammed praetorians.

So yeah win the battle if you can.

I've done it twice now at level 17. You need the following for reliable chance at victory:

-Equip Bestiat with the Spear of Achilles so he has Reaper for free, and equip him with the amulet for bloody kills as it actually reduces the number of downed wounded but not dead you need to execute by straight up killing enemies.

-Bestiat needs to have marathon for a one time infinite movement along with the perk that gives +2 movement every time you down an enemy

-Bestiat should have his armor equiped for the refresh in focus points every time he kills an enemy.

-Julia should have Barrage at minimum and if possible overwatch (but you can do it without overwatch)

-You need at least 1 character (usually that means Syneros) who has the perk that allows you to give back an action to character with the upgrade that refreshes an ability.

With those you can win reliably.

Overwatch is a bad ability in this game because Barrage is by far the strongest archer skill, and the Sniper tree synergizes much better with the Hunter tree. Besides that, I agree on everything else you said.
