You can also play the DLC content as standalone from the menu - but I would imagine playing it as a part of your main playthrough would be more interesting :)
Also when you start a new campaign consider turning gladiator companion to off; you will still recruit them but they will be a tank class principe instead of a gladiator, this is because the gameplay is based around having at least 2 tank class principes in later missions and the gladiator is an advanced class that takes alot of skill to use.
Note the first gladiator you will meet in the story is always a scout class velite. The class conversion happens to the final companion.
