Before your attacks can damage his health, you need to remove his armor points first. Once the armor points have been shredded or removed, they turn grey and the armor will no longer provide protection. Only the Principes has the ability to restore armor points during combat, with skills like Brace Skills.
Unless you have weapons that specifically have the ability to 'shred' armor which only affect the armor points, the armor points will take the blunt of your attack. If you can inflict damage that's greater than the armor point, the excess damage will drain the health. If the damage doesn't exceed the amount of armor points, then no damage to the HP is inflicted. Pilas are also excellent to use against armor points.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Focus points are exclusively used by your Veles units, the more focus points, the better. Your Veles units start with 0 focus points, up to maximum of 5 points. Learning certain skills can raise the maximum amount, as well as equipping talismans and schematics that change focus stats. Their purpose is like action points, except they're not replenished every turn like action points. They're earned by attacks that require spending action points and spent by using skills that require focus such as: shiv, cheap shot, 'kill on ground', dodge, etc.
You did a big out of topic for armor, the question isn't about armor but about max armor.
But for focus you are right, for the story I knew the stats but forgot its name.
About max armor, the worse is I finally quoted a skill quoting armor increase of +1 when used, and I failed quote what it increased, but certainly not armor.
And pray tell your definition of max armor, because it really sounded like what you were referring to armor points (the little yellow squares).
Max armor: The maximum armor level a character can has.
But if it clear there's skills to increase focus during combat, it's not clear for max armor.
What allows increase armor during combat, for example I finally quoted the skill, Fortress: Also allows increase Armor by pile of Strength, except that when using Reinforcement skill adding one pile of Strength, I didn't quote Armor increased by one.
So what skill/items/armor/weapon allows exploit an increased Max Armor?
The Triarii and Sagittarii, have the lowest max armor stats. They benefit the most from adding extra armor. The Velites and Gladiatores have it slightly better. If you acquire the Heavy Skirmisher skill for a Veles unit, they can wear heavy armor. In doing so, you will increase max armor. You can do the same for a gladiator unit by acquiring the Secutor skill (must acquire Safeguard skill first). While engaging in a battle, the improvised Safeguarding Stance & Armor skill will come in handy, because it will increase max armor for two turns.
The Principes are the basically the tanks so it wouldn't come as a surprise that they can attain the highest armor stats in the game. No skills for them. Just the armor, schematics and talismans.
The Fortress skills doesn't affect the max armor stats, but the armor points. By restoring it 1 point per stack of strong.
When you select the character in inventory screen for example, there's a tab named STATS.
Select a character, select the STATS tab. At top some icons one shows Armor level, it depends of equipment.
Still in in STATS tab, there's a list, scroll down you find the stat Max Armor, it's value base is 7 and non dependent of equipment or those with a specific trait of Max Armor Increase.
So explain me again the Fortress skill with the right terms shown by game UI.
And if you have an example of the use of Max Armor stat that isn't through Fortress skill please explain me.
