Archelaus is quite vulnerable to fire, generally I found the best way to take him down is with archers. There's a lot of sneaky cover around that middle section you can use to keep attacking him with fire and barbed (+bleeding) arrows and stay in cover. He wont come down from that building unless your forces get too close, so the fool will just pass out from DOT effects.
I also found its best to use the rest of your forces to push forward up the map & help the friendlies stay alive to deal with the reinforcements that mainly come from the North East and North corners. As you say you can get overwhelmed with reinforcements if your not there to take them down quickly.
However, killing him fit my roleplay decision more importantly. So even if ended up being slower and harder I’d still gone that way after trying both.
