How to hire Praetorians?
I am only on act 1 and have just taken the compound on the new island. I have noticed i can have 6 characters with me. On going to the barracks I can only hire Centurions and not Praetorians. Do i need to upgrade the barracks ? I am struggling going in with 4 members due to one of my team being injured and i have no option to assign a Centurions to my party. Any advice on how to hire a Praetorians to add to your party would be appreciated.

Not possible in act 1.

They're not very clear on this. Before going to Asia Minor, talk to one of the people by your legions tent (your legions, not the other legion). He'll get you started on how to hire Praetorians.

It's not necessary for you to do it before going to Asia Minor, but you'll want them as many side quests and radial missions simply can't be done without Praetorians.

On the same interface you hire centurions on, you should see a button on the lower right to hire them as cents or praetorians. Also on the the other tab of that interface you can drag and drop your centurions onto the party side so you can use them in your party instead of leading troops.

When i am on the same interface to hire the people I only have a hire Centurion button or close. On hiring them and going to the party tab, I have 4 officers and the only option is to dismiss. I have dismissed and tried rehiring but this changes nothing. I do not have a Praetorian option. I do not know if this is due to not being far into the game but on an injury occurring i have to fight with 4.

What is the difference between a centurion and a praetorian? How are they used differently and such?

I don't think the game makes this obvious enough. I also got confused about the difference about hiring Praetoirians/Legionari and Centurions.

The interface could do with a few user-friendly changes.

From what I understand it now, Centurians lead your Legions (although I'm still not sure if you need more than 1 per Legion), Praetorians can be added to your squad where you have control of them in tactical battles like your companions. They come from the same pool of available recruits at the Barracks.

OK, let me make the mess clear:

You can only hire Praetorians after you leave Lesbos. You will go to Mysia in Asia Minor and your legion will fight and take over the outpost. At that point, go speak with Orestes next to your personal tent and he will give you a mission to pacify the sector. That mission includes a an objective to hire three Praetorians. You will then go to the recruiting tent and at that point the option to hire legionaries as Paretorias becomes available.
