I'm on the opposite spectrum I usually don't bother with taking more than 1 Princep
I usually take Caeso and leave behind the gladiator chick and instead bring a 2nd archer or triarus
Sagittarius especially once you get tier 2 weapons are pretty strong. Overdrawn Shot is a guaranteed crit.
Calida tends to get 2 free kills going for Overdrawn shots on untrained units since I have her carry 2 bows with overdrawn.
She can then easily deal another 20-ish damage to a 3rd trained unit possibly more if I wanna go in melee range and eat a hit but get a guaranteed crit from the point blank passive.
Veles with prowling and dodge (/w slippery) can easily survive better and outlive princeps all the while hitting much harder than princeps
Bloodthristy giving them another 15% damage per kill for 2 turns means they should have no problem killing multiple units as well.
Reaper is also pretty busted.
Princeps in general I find pretty useless they are only there to trigger enemy archer overwatch and to bait enemy overwatch so I get free pokes from triarius with interference
Even then overwatch bait stops as useful in the 2nd half of Act 2 since you got javelin overwatch which will just break shield forcing you to repair, at that point its better to bait
overwatch javelins with Veles who will likely dodge the attack in the first place or just take the attack fine since they are hp sponges
Sagittarius easily can score 2-3 kills per turn thanks to tier 2+ weapons having the overdrawn shot ability the thing that holds them back regardless of which subclass you go for is they don't have any damage buffing abilities for themselves or allies and crits
Veles are probably the most OP class when it comes to hordes as they can get stronger and stronger thanks to duelist tree. Destroy enemy morale killing leaders with Assassin tree. (honestly those 2 trees pair up very well). Reaper alone in the brawler tree makes that also an excellent choice for clearing out mobs.
Triarus also have great DPS not to mention the most reliable way to remove armor (aside from burning pilus).
Medic tree is very valuable and you should go out of way of always having one medic whether it be Syneros or a praetorian for pacify region quests.
Destroyer tree makes Triarus the strongest single target killer thanks to Reckless ability combined with tier 2+ weapon skill spin attack (if their armor is low or non existent you can easily dish out 60+ damage which is enough to oneshot even bosses provided you first shred their armor).
I don't really bother with Flagbearer but that is one way to reliably buff Sagittarius.
Princeps need Brace from defender tree or end up wasting a weapon skill slot taking a shield heal ability (whether it be something like Bracing Strike that deals a bit of damage and gives Strong stacks or deal no damage at all with a skill that only regains shield strength). If they don't have one of the two then once their shield is out they're rather a waste of space. Armor tends to only be useful for a few turns since enemy triarius will quickly shred your armor meaning you either have to quickly target them or avoid them.
They don't really got good ways to buff their damage much like sagittarius but at lleast sagittarius can get crits more often
-The Princeps has some very good unarmed skills, so in order to use those, you need to have only a shield in your secondary setup. Those skills are:
=>Bracer block: this gives you Deflect, and is an excellent way to spend your action during some turns when you can't reach an enemy, often the first one. It stays for one round afterwards too, so this means that you basically never waste an action point. It's also very useful in order to keep your shield up, because there's some weapon skills that needs you to have at least 1 shield in order to be available. It opens up some interesting tactical possibilites too, like activating Bracer block and triggering on purpose the attack of opportunity of an opponent, so that you can for example circle around with someone else and flank him, or simply disengage your archer that got engaged in melee without gettng him hurt.
=>Tackle: it deals a bit of damage and knocks down the target, which is a very useful crowd control against dangerous enemies that you know you won't be able to kill this round. This one isn't available at start, you need to get a few levels to unlock it, so it pays to check your unarmed setup every time you level up, just in case.
I use those two fairly often and it really improved my Princeps' efficiency.
-Because he has very good unarmed and weapon skills, the Princeps is often action-starved. A lot of his tree active skills needs an action point, so by the end of act 2 I've noticed that I really can't use that often most of his tree skills, because I almost have always a better action available. So I'm pretty sure that the best way to build a Princeps is to focus on his passive skills, and to only take his best active skills, like Brace or the AoE stun in the Veteran tree. He has a lot of good stuff to take when it comes to passives, but his best one is probably the ability to stun when dealing an attack of opportunity, which makes him much better at holding the line or tie up some pesky enemies like archers.
-The Defender tree is basically a trap imo, and should be avoided besides Brace and it's associated passive skill, which allows you to recover some shield strength instantly, even if you are shield broken. I'm not a huge fan of the Vanguard tree either, besides the first couple of passives. His best tree is hands down the Veteran, with some game-changing stuff like a stun affecting everyone in a 2 hex AoE around the Princeps, or again the ability to stun with your attack of opportunities.
Last but not least, the Princeps has a very unique shield ability named Hunker down, which is very easy to get considering the pool of shield skills isn't that big to begin with. It's situationally awesome, really, and is too a gamechanger in a lot of situations.
Yes and No. Every class is viable because the game just isn't that hard., but it seems like the level design for many missions is to get in and get out asap before you are overwhelmed, and the classes that offer high mobility and damage are going to be better for this reason.
Plus the real question was not which class is best, some guys even argued about companions. The real question was which class is best for main character and I still think it is either Veles or Princeps, since for the main guy it is best having someone doing the kills and survive. With Princeps you can get a shield and shrug much of the bad stuff (like fire) off, with Veles you just activate dodge/tactical, run through enemies and dodge arrows.
So for the main character to make a good show Veles and Princeps are still best.
I'd prefer the MC to be a princeps simply because you already got a Sagitarrius and Archer and don't really need more than that. Properly skilled they already kill most stuff in range anyway and your Tanks just stand there and pull aggro, making the killing easier.
