Of these, the two most notable are Syneros's heal action (free healing without using a bandage item, which obviously has huge synergy with the heal buff Triarius gets, making him a better healer than your MC can ever be). Also your companion Princeps gets a nice ranged morale debuff.
So leaving aside Syneros being the best healer in the game, the remaining thing you want on your MC is to be self-sufficient and reasonably durable. I'd lean towards Triarius or Princeps for that reason. Games like this frequently feature battles where you get the MC solo or stuck in melee, so going for something with decent defense seems wise. Archer isn't terrible in melee, but they aren't particularly tough, either.
Probably safe going for anything, really.
I went Triarius. They don't get shields, but they get better armor than Veles or Skitarii, and having one to focus on the buffs and armor shred while Syneros just heals seems like a decent combo.
I don't know, I've been in situations where I had to fight unarmed, and I'm sure glad I picked Veles for that Pankration skill.
But personally? I always like to play as a Principes. Having a character that takes hits and can also deal damage never gets old.
That said, The Veles has a number of skills (middle tree I think) that increase its dodge chances and what not. And another tree allows you to move about without causing reaction attacks. So if built right, he/she can survive well enough.
Archer is mainly about range and causing space. You can eventually upgrade the push to be able to knockdown (out for 2 turns unless a 'healer' picks em up) anybody that gets into close range with you. So not bad I guess. Once you get an archer on some high ground their range becomes INSANE.
I feel like I rarely have the option NOT to. :P
Any but princeps. You'll like 2 princeps all the time in the party, but Princeps is the ONLY class you get 2 among companions.
I'd personally avoid Veles too, because that's the one class I prefer to just use 1.
If I played again I'd probably make a Triarius. They do crazy damage in the destroyer tree and the flagbearer path has a lot of great utility. Triarius flagbearers always feel like they can do something with their range, mobility, and utility.
A Saggitarius would be cool also. They always bring good damage and having a extra person that can kill archers is a major plus.
