Most useful class for the Main Char?
What's everyone thoughts as to which class the main character should be? I choose the tank character myself...but was debating being a heavy or archer. What did everyone else do?

Destroyer to bypass shields.

Skill trees are by class, and you can recruit extra praetorians (generic characters) to fill in any slot. The closest things to "unique" skills are the unarmed abilities some of your named companions get.

Of these, the two most notable are Syneros's heal action (free healing without using a bandage item, which obviously has huge synergy with the heal buff Triarius gets, making him a better healer than your MC can ever be). Also your companion Princeps gets a nice ranged morale debuff.

So leaving aside Syneros being the best healer in the game, the remaining thing you want on your MC is to be self-sufficient and reasonably durable. I'd lean towards Triarius or Princeps for that reason. Games like this frequently feature battles where you get the MC solo or stuck in melee, so going for something with decent defense seems wise. Archer isn't terrible in melee, but they aren't particularly tough, either.

Probably safe going for anything, really.

I figured as much! I guess ill stay the tank for now then and be sure to get some generic npcs to be the Triarius

i like the idea of the archer for some reason. marksman or sniper. the marksman overwatch sounds handy.

Princeps is a good way to go, I think.

I went Triarius. They don't get shields, but they get better armor than Veles or Skitarii, and having one to focus on the buffs and armor shred while Syneros just heals seems like a decent combo.

We still don´t know how meny shield enemies will be around in mid-end game so hard to say how needed triarius is. You also got pillum for it, but the armor-shred seems rly useful for a MC

I don't know, I've been in situations where I had to fight unarmed, and I'm sure glad I picked Veles for that Pankration skill.

Since you get followers of all, tank is a pretty good choice. Archer could be a bit sketchy, but any should work.
From a party balance perspective, I'd go with Triarius. Letting Syneros be your healer/staff user while you stab things with a pike makes for a balanced party.

But personally? I always like to play as a Principes. Having a character that takes hits and can also deal damage never gets old.

Hard to tell really. But I agree that Princips (current class I am playing, gotta go with the classic to start!) and Triarius would be the best best for survivability. Plus heavy armor just looks so cool. Gotta say so that I wish there were more stabbing animations. Most Roman weapons focused on being more stabby stabby than slashy slashy.

That said, The Veles has a number of skills (middle tree I think) that increase its dodge chances and what not. And another tree allows you to move about without causing reaction attacks. So if built right, he/she can survive well enough.

Archer is mainly about range and causing space. You can eventually upgrade the push to be able to knockdown (out for 2 turns unless a 'healer' picks em up) anybody that gets into close range with you. So not bad I guess. Once you get an archer on some high ground their range becomes INSANE.

Flagbearer for sure, the buff is huge.

If you plan to play with all the companions, two of them are Princeps, so playing a 3rd one as MC may be a bit redundant. Besides that, Syneros has a unique healing skill when he's unarmed, which makes him a very good support character and an unusual Triarus, so there's a nice spot to fill for a DPS-oriented Triarus imo, with the Destroyer tree. Regarding the Sagittarus, I find the Sniper tree quite bad compared to the other two, which makes all Sagittarus somewhat the same for me (Marksman/Hunter), so I would avoid that class with the MC, especially when you take into account that you will more than once face scripted battles where you can't reposition and will find yourself on the frontline, ranged character or not. Finally, the Veles is a good choice too, especially if you go the Brawler route, because note having a unique unarmed skill for you MC leaves you with all 3 unarmed slots available for unarmed skills (you get more of those later on with levels).

Any but princeps. You'll like 2 princeps all the time in the party, but Princeps is the ONLY class you get 2 among companions.

I'd personally avoid Veles too, because that's the one class I prefer to just use 1.

I've tried Vele and Princeps. An extra Princeps is always nice to have. They get very tanky later on and are great for covering the other classes. I only played early game with the Vele, but it felt awful. Later the damage gets better and the class feels nicer, but early on it just felt like it was a class that walked in, killed nothing, then died in 1 turn. In mid game Tabat can just walk in, nuke 1 guy from full health usually, and walk back behind Caeso or whoever is there.

If I played again I'd probably make a Triarius. They do crazy damage in the destroyer tree and the flagbearer path has a lot of great utility. Triarius flagbearers always feel like they can do something with their range, mobility, and utility.

A Saggitarius would be cool also. They always bring good damage and having a extra person that can kill archers is a major plus.
