Just won the battle I'm not supposed to win (Die with Honour) - should I reload to let myself get killed?
Yeah, I know you're not supposed to be able to win this fight but in my case on turn 1 Bestia "The Beast" Tabat obliged by accounting for at least 10 of the first wave and while I was reeling from the onslaught of wave 2 on turn 2 wondering WTF to do and what WTF this was all about anyway I noticed that The Beast had obliged again on turn 2 by procing the 5% chance of a further Reaper off the Achiles spear. So he slaughtered all the rest of them (with a bit of help from the others to soften them up for him) bar one miserable archer lurking at the back, an archer that was not long for this world come turn 3.

Mind you, I didn't really play this straight, I reloaded a few times to try out different sequences and positions etc, so I would say, yes, this battle is probably impossible even if Bestia gets a second bite of the Reaper cherry playing straight, too many things can go wrong, glances etc. I just wanted to see if it could be done for the hell of it.

Anyways after the battle nothing happened. Another day, another pile of slaughtered Gauls, another sack of loot and bunch of XP leading to everyone getting to L18.

Now my understanding is that Lurco is supposed to turn up after you get downed in this battle and save your arse. He obviously didn't in my case. So my question is if anything important happens when Lurco turns up that I will miss if I don't reload and let my myself "die with honour" like a good legate.

Leaving the area I got a message from Vercingetorix to meet up and discuss his interogation of the spy leading to the plan to set up the ambush in Alesia where I have to go now to meet up with him again.

So yeah, have I missed anything important for the ending as result of this?

You didnt miss nothing important, but to be fair losing seemed to me much more rewarding then winning, dialogue, reactions, actions and actual cosmetic reward (color or emblem, dont remember).
I've won first playthrough, then specifically lost second time. Simply to see the difference, and winning that battle is rather... underwhelming lol

P.S. But you dont feel any sort of humiliation. This game is too railed in this way, like in ending of Egypt, where I've annihilated everythhing in throne room in one turn, yet "was saved" by Lurco somehow

nah dude, mad props. die with honor? ♥♥♥♥ that. way more rewarding living and not needing that lil snake to take the glory.

Just to be clear, as I am approaching this myself, again...

My previous three plays have led to this, dying ignominiously and RAGE QUIT!

This time I have gotten three Legionarii up as Reaper Velus...
If I manage to kill everyone on the first wave, does the battle end?

Is it a bugged quest IF you win?
Go0lden_Archer Mar 17, 2022 @ 12:10pm
it's not bugged. it just ends with your victory. and you continue as normal.

and yes if you kill everyone (there are some gauls on the "bridge", them too) you end battle and finish quest.

As I recall it there are two waves. The initial mob (the two chiefs and there adds, total of a bout 12-15 maybe) and then on turn 2 you get two additional groups come in from both directions, sandwiching you. 4 or 5 in each group I would say. Total of 20-25 enemies total, maybe.

After the second wave on turn 2 no more turned up.

I don't think it's bugged if you win the battle. Nothing happens except a big XP dump, no dialogue or anything so obviously the devs didn't make any content for this eventuality presumably believing they had made the encounter impossible to win so it wasn't required.

You get the message to progress the plot after you leave as per normal (at least I think it's normal).

The real difficulty with the battle is that they go first and they are right on top of you.

Greg,

I think you're right about the DEVS

With a Reaper Velus, and a good weapons layout, you can cakewalk everyone except Pricips with their Shields. Just make sure you knock down the shields and then the Reaper eats 10 or so of the enemies.

Also noted, KILL any incapacitated enemies or the healers will restore them. If you have a Velus with that trait as well, you also get a moral boost for you and drain for them.

There is another aspect to consider, there's a bow that doesn't deflect off shields, and if you use the perq on a bow with Suppressing Shot power, you can knock out multiple shields in one shot. And everyone under that AOE gets "harried".

Good combinations like this makes it tough for them.

As to them going first, keep your Reaper Velus from the initial impact and he doesn't have as far to run killing stuff

The battle used to go on forever until you "lost", which means that if you were winning, you had to just give up and die.

They added victory being possible as well as a unique item if you do win in a later patch, but you aren't intended to win this battle.

The prize you get for winning is just there as a "good job you!" but it doesn't affect the story in any way.

When did they patch that in? I have beaten the game 1st week of february and it was already winnable back then.

Some time after these threads:

It was already "fixed" by the time I got to that part in my own game which was right after the Reaper nerf, but I'm pretty sure that it was in one of the first patches for the game.

Isn't that still the case that gaul get reinforced every 2 turns ?
gnomad Mar 18, 2022 @ 4:26pm
just did it myself. it doesnt matter how many waves you survive, you only win if you kill/disable everyone on the map
gnomad Mar 18, 2022 @ 4:32pm
heres the screenshot. doubt how it could get more satisfying than this heh

I played my big battle, and was on the fourth wave before I realized one of their sneaky dudes had routed into a corner.

I had killed everything else, but didn't know this guy was hiding. Finally found him, wiped him out, and had over 30 bodies to loot.

Never saw Lurco, wish he had shown up, I would have whacked his ass!

NERFED, you say????

WTF did Reaper do before this nerf FFS?

I mean I would say at least 90% of my fights from early Act 3 onward were one turn affairs 'cos of Bestia and his Achilles spear. Sure it's very satisfying, especially dispensing justice in the finale back in Rome, but really in the annals of RPG history I think it would be hard to find anything to compete with it in the OP league tables.

Well, that's easy.
