Hang on to it. You can get the schematic to recraft it back in Rome at the end of Act 1.

But need to very careful when first talk with Cotta in Rome. Explore all options. Because the schematics are very missable.

how do you get the sword? This was the only unique I missed on my first play-through,

You get it by getting his diary back and NOT reading it, in beginning of the chapter.
Then when he dies you get the sword.
Edit: spelling.

Talk to your bosses again right when you get first promoted to Legate.

It doesn't matter if you read ceasar's diary or not.

There is a dialogue between the player character and G. Julius Caesar's mother, Aurelia Cotta and the Consul you saved, Marcus Aurelius Cotta during the feast at Lucullus' villa. I don't know if your choices matter as I have only done it once, but I received the schematic from Aurelia in this dialogue.
