But I agree, I have been let down by Tokyo RPG factory twice already, I remember when they first announced themselves as a company, I was hyped to play their games! Was hoping they were going to make more "classic" JRPG games, similar to FF6-9 or Dragon Quest.
But yeah.. I'm sure it's just going to be average at best sadly.. :/
Reviews accross the web said that Lost Sphere and I'm Setsuna were not bad but between average and good with 69% and 75% respectively. And on Metacritic you already have some reviews for Oninaki and... it seems it is an average game with a score between 65~80% but with the low number of reviews it is not accurate for the moment.
When Tokyo RPG releases a title I get excited. I know what I'm buying into. I know what to expect. I know I'm in for at least 20 hours of adventuring fun.
Your say Setsuna was "genetic" and I hold that title a one of my best game in my library. I even featured it on my Steam page.

Just more mediocrity from a developer who doesn't seem interested in improving.
70% and 6/10 (for users). That's not mediocrity... i don't get it.
That is absolutely mediocrity. I know we like to pretend that a 5/10 is mediocrity, but that's not how grading scales for games have ever been used. You read any one of those reviews and it's clear the game is stunningly mediocre.
More like by the numbers JRPGs.
They did not take risks. They basically emulated the PS1/snes era.
But i will admit they where a bit overpriced. Considering they where indie level games only published by a AAA company.
They did NOT emulate the PS1/SNES era, at least none of the games people actually fell in love with. They made lifeless husks of what those games were. Go play Chrono Trigger, FF6, Lunar SSSC, or any classics such as those and then play Setsuna. It's missing EVERYTHING. Starting with literally any sort of energy whatsoever, closely followed by likable characters, then a varied and interesting soundtrack that conveys a huge array of emotions, then dialogue that expands more than 2 boxes, then world variety and sense of place, then several layers of polish. Anyone who thinks anything RPG Factory has put out is anywhere in the BALLPARK of what made this genre great is fooling themselves.
This company makes middling RPGs and churns them out so fast that it never gets any better at making them, or understanding why they're not beloved like the games they so desperately try to imitate.
I disagree with you. I read them and what i read is "this game has good and bad points. It is an average game".
Right. Average. Mediocre.
Average is different than mediocre... we don't have the same dictionnary. And Oninaki is above average so... good it is not mediocre by your standards.
Best regards.
