This game truly deserves mixed?
Just curious......looks like the combat is actually one of it's strong suits...I'll download the demo to see but people seem to be very divisive of this game.

Gameplay is the best, the story is also fresh but the execution fails. Shame that this fascinating idea gone into waste as world building is lackluster. Dialogue is also amateurish. Characters aside from the main character are forgettable. I didn't even feel them or care what will happen to them in this game. If you love cool gameplay you'll love this. replayability is 10/10

The game starts off slow since you need to unlock all the cool stuff first. Many don't have the patience for that, and some even expected this game to be as fastpaced as DmC and Bayonetta. The people who can slog their way through the first couple hours of the game on the story alone will end up finding... well, maybe not gold, but silver at least.

The demo just told me all I need to know, slow ass repetitive combat, depressing story and the MC is a plank of wood with emo aspirations, also no music on the first map, I was about to fall sleep.

the visuals are good, but graphics ain't everything you know, and for 50 bucks is a scam, hollow knight is 15$ and that game hook me 15 seconds in.

Again, never ceases to amaze me how radically different perspectives change from person to person...I feel the exact opposite of the game honestly.
game is crap

While I don't own the game, even if combat is their strong suit doesn't mean it lacks in other areas. Pointless to have an story based RPG that tells a weak story.

It absolutely does not deserve mixed, and I can say this basically undoubtedly due to another recent release. A game called Crystar came out the other day by Furyu that is also an Action RPG dealing with themes of death. Oninaki is currently reviewed mixed on Steam, Crystar on the other hand is reviewed Very Positive which is absurd to me.

While I would say both game possess fairly strong stories, I can say Crystar falls short in basically every other regard to Oninaki. Character customization is far weaker, map design is nonexistant(Roguelike style map segments that are assembled to make maps; however, maps aren't randomly or procedurally generated, they're the same every time.. they just couldnt be arsed to make unique maps), combat is shallow to the point where it's usually better to just spam your basic attack.

While I did also enjoy Crystar, its very telling as to why game reviews are absolute nonsense. People have very different and varying opinions on what they like, that can change wildly based on the group of people you're asking.

Square has a very large and more casual RPG playing audience, and Tokyo RPG Factory was a branch created specifically to make games for a niche audience that likes the more hardcore mechanics(note I didn't state DIFFICULTY) of the JRPG genre. Tokyo RPG Factory games are going to catch the attention of this more casual crowd and get bashed for not doing things that appease the casual market which is fine; however, also means you should absolutely take reviews on their games with a grain of salt. Find a way to try them yourself and determine on your own if its your cup of tea or not.

Fortunately the demo pretty much latched on to me...couldn't stop playing it and had to pick it up. No regrets at all...the dameon system is easily the most intriguing part of the game. It's fun to switch up attack styles on the fly....I'd be down for some new dameon dlc lol

Yeah, I already wrote about it on Crystar forums - but the 2 games are nearly 1:1 copies in both the wannabe dark theme of the plot and the core gameplay.
And despite myself not really liking bot oninaki and crystar - I would say Oninaki is much more superior in every aspect... That is to say they are both MEH games, but Oninaki is much less meh.
They actually fail at the same points - a wanna be dark plot which ends up childish ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥(the core of most nowaday JRPGs, so eh... can't complain? Oninaki has more fail at actually making sense aside of plot because author sees it like this), pretty crap character balance(oninaki was terrible, but if you try crystar - you can see it can get much worse), underwhelming amount of enemy types(both games barely have any unique enemies at all and in both games enemies barely react to player at all.. bosses are pretty decent in both games, but are stilll so so due to the rest of the game balance being meh), very uninspiring locations, which feel like they were randomly generated(less so in oninaki, since it has a few okay'ish places), the art is pretty good in both games but in both cases it does not suit the game theme and atmosphere at all(oninaki is a bit better there, since the cuteness is much less forced, but honestly both are terribly unsuitable)

Does this game deserve a steam 6/10? No, I think it deserves ~7/10 honestly, closer to the 8/10 but not really worth of 8. On the other hand crystar is at 9/10 atm and is only worth 5-6.

I own both crystar and this.and I played this month octopath travler.

OT was boring. Crystar ok, but to long zones, to much running and lame combat. I liked visuals though and non combat options.

This game so far is a mini dw9. I like repetitive combat. Crystar lacked that.
