Does the AI actually kill
Does actually kill or do the bodies just spawn in? are you able to catch the killer in the act?

You can catch a killer in the act. The AI will go through the whole process of acquiring a weapon, finding their victim and killing them

The camera footage system, the shop customer lists and the witness testimonies all rely on people actually walking over there in person. All this would be missing if things would just spawn in, but they're available.

I've walked into a restaurant while the killer was stabbing someone in front of the employee lockers (side note: that means there were eye-witnesses... I just now realized this. Maybe they can actually tell you that they were witnesses or if they only have the "I saw someone suspicious" line lol..... I haven't tried that yet.)

It was quite comical actually. Everyone was running around like headless chickens or cowering in corners, and the killer was standing there, slightly squatted, glaring at me-- following my gaze wherever I went.... But she just stood there for like........ a whole minute, not moving lmao!!! Then suddenly.... she just BOOKED IT. I had kinda been staring in shock, and I was looking at her up close, so when she finally moved, I jumped about 15 ft out of my chair and through my ceiling LMAO x'D

Sadly, I had no dang handcuffs QQ

You can see it happen live. Only the killer can kill though. Any other source of damage can only result in knockout. Doesn't matter if it is you, another citizen or a sentry turret.

If you are not in the area when an NPC makes the kill, I'm pretty sure the game uses its function of simulating past events when you next come into proximity. Not too differently from when you make the game generate past security photos.

They can give you one visual evidence on top of it (like the suspicious person having black hair or being of average height), but they will never identify the killer directly, even if they saw it happen before their eyes.

I once had a pretty funny case. I happened to have a murder happen in a apartment right underneath mine. Security gates are locked, but I took the vents and arrived JUST before the enforcers. But there was already an angry enforcer in the apartment, even before the usual two came in. Turns out, this was the husband of the victim and lived in the apartment. So, that checked out. But I wondered the same thing given that I didn't see anyone else coming or going, and there was no security footage. All evidence was hinting at a serial killer what with messages on the walls and the "LET'S PLAY" note.

Turns out the husband WAS the murderer, and I caught a lucky break while thinking about how he was the only person who could do it given the time frame. Rather hilarious in retrospect that I basically caught him red-handed and didn't even realize it.

The murders are actually predetermined by your seed. If you make a save, wait for a murder and then load your save and go to the scene of the crime ahead of time you can watch it play out.

I just had a recent case where I had determined who the murderer was and while being thorough, I trailed him to a place where he attempted to murder again. I knocked him out and arrested him but unfortunately the AI didn't realise I was saving them and still tried to hurt me as I ran out of the building the hand in the case file.

i've seen someone i was tailing as a suspect kill people connected with the case so yeah I think they do.

The murders are indeed simulated. Part of the draw of this game is the constant simulation of every civilian.

I think this is inaccurate, kind of; the killers and victims are likely pre-determined, but I do know that due to the nature of this game being a constant simulation, killers can get stuck pathfinding or other nonsense, meaning the murders themselves are not seeded and likely isn't consistent.

Not sure though. I have not seen the code or anything.

Well, once a killer is set to kill someone else, then it's probably impossible to change that fact through decisions alone. But depending on how long you can delay it, the next case after that might already be different. Might test that at some point^^

Also i've played a seed twice so far and one time i've had the 2nd tutorial person being killed like 7 hours after i'Ve found the first crime scene and the next time the killer was still in the apartment, so i was able to prevent the second murder, so it's definitely possible to influence the RNG to some degree^^

Minor differences in CPU calculation alone will change the RNG. Seed A will work one way for user A, but when sent to user B with a different computer, the extremely minor changes in calculation speeds / thread optimization / etc will make the overall game different. Butterfly effect, pretty much.

every single NPC in the game has a complete routine that they follow through on; I've hidden in a target's house, knowing their work hours, and when they didn't come home at the right time I went to investigate. They opened the door as I was on my way out, and I had just enough time to duck into the closet. She was an hour late to get home from work, for whatever reason. The first thing she did was use the bathroom and brush her teeth, then she walked out and turned her stove on and the TV. She just stood around and watched TV for a while.

All of this is to say- every single NPC in the game is like this. They all have a life, and they do believable things. It's pretty cool.
