Modders are almost certainly on it.
I can see modders handling it too, tho haha
Yeah, so much tobacco and no possibility to smoke is dumb.
Blame the ESRB and the governments.
The same ones who won't allow any form of gambling, even fictional gambling with fake money.
These devs don't make the laws, they just are bound to obey them.
Alcohol isn't particularly banned, nor advertisements for it.
Smoking on the other hand, is, or at least advertising and depicting it.
Vaping is on it's way to the same ban.
But even then, the ESRB are also bound to those same laws.
So blame the governments, not the devs nor the ESRB (they have to follow the law, same as us).
I have epilepsy, I can literally have 2 beers and have a seizure lol, if 'health' were the actual argument in general, alcohol itself wouldn't see such wide spread accessibility across media and video games or be defined as somehow seperate from other drugs when it is literally as dangerous or more dangerous than several controlled or regulated illegal substances, is one of the single most carcinogenic and addictive drugs on the planet, is one of the few drugs that can kill you both from over dose and from withdrawal (like benzo's), is one of the first drugs most children/teens ever have access too, etc.
There isn't any logic to it, it's purely just entrenched culture that drives it, nothin' to do with safety as if safety actually drove the logic we'd simply just not see alcohol as the accepted substance it is today. In fact it's that very entrenched culture behind why alcohol is often labeled as somehow separate TO drugs 'i.e media, health etc stuff might describe talking about the topic as 'alcohol and other drugs' when 'drugs' would sufficiently otherwise still root alcohol in the statement, but because of its unique and protect status as the legal narcotic of choice around much of the globe its dangers are otherwise dismissed or downgraded and that is also reflected in games despite its real world impact and consequence.
Commenters are right tho that obviously dev can't do anything about esrb ratings and stuff - I just still think it's a valid critique that dev is clearly copping out on the atmosphere of what the world they've built could be for a dystopia lite for sake of wider sales and reach to audiences and such. ESRB isn't actually about protecting kids as much as its regulating content but that doesn't necessarily means theres consistent logic to what they consider justifiable content to limit or w.e
i.e how can a games content containing death, murder, etc be more appropriate for children then literally a smoke, haha. You can have murder and death, and alcohol, but god forbid you take a puff!
Dont get me wrong I smoke myself lol. sorry about your epilepsy also. I guess it depends how we’re defining ‘bad’ too.
It’s like breathing is bad if you’re underwater.
Tbh I read some time ago that some studies showed that some stout per day was actually good for you. How true that is/was these days depending on what you read etc I dunno but I guess I meant in comparison to smoking health wise in that sense. Might be wrong though. Have a good weekend.
I'm not a scientist but I'm pretty sure virtual cigarettes are safe to consume
Im not a high resolution thinker but I'm pretty sure it’s do with not promoting bad habits and health to kids
I don’t care either way tbh I smoke and drink, but I’m an adult so there’s that.
But I mean everyone in thread is also right, obviously smoking is bad for you and obviously there are good reasons an independent dev might want their product to otherwise reach as wide an audience as possible, and the fun that younger kids can have exploring a generated city like this kind of solving their own organic cases and so on certainly outweighs the need for atmosphere to compromise that by making it like an M rated title just so we can have smokes and other atmospheric ♥♥♥♥ haha
I think it's just that I won't stop wishing there was so much more to the game in general because of how unique it otherwise is, the fact someone finally gave us a game where we can be like Charlie in Always Sunny in Philadelphia trying to solve Pepe Silvia case, haha.
I really hope it inspires other devs to more or less try a similar thing but really root it in a grittier atmosphere more akin to the last 70 yrs of detective fiction in general so we can feel like Columbo or something :p
Amazing series. Too bad Fincher tanked it so he could focus on other projects. I would have loved just one more season.
