Someone left a review talking about its flaws
One of which was "if you get accosted by a mugger and don't give them your money and instead defend yourself, everyone around you jumps in to *help the mugger*?"

Is this true? Also.... "After being mugged and everyone ganging up on me I loaded the game and just gave them the money. They then walked slightly away and then BACK TOWARD ME AND DEMANDED MORE MONEY. THEY MUGGED ME AGAIN. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GAME'S PROGRAMMING."

Has anyone else experienced this? It sounds whacky.

It is true, but it's a consequence of how the game handles "illegal" actions. To be clear, you can simply sprint away from muggers. they are slow and bad at mugging people. I have literally seen them walk up to an NPC, demand money, get told to piss off, then walk away all sad.

that being said- the reason the NPCs "defend" the mugger is because NPCs deem the player hitting other NPCs as illegal regardless of context. This rather harsh view of things does not apply to other NPCs who can happily gun you down without issue.

This is, by all accounts, kind of unintended behavior in a sense. I'm sure the dev did not explicitly want self-defense to be a crime.

NPCs that witness a crime in general will simply try to kill the person that committed the crime, except for in cases of minor trespassing.

Edit: frankly, its OP (of the review)'s fault for giving the dude money over and over. Just... run away. Did this not occur to them as an option?

the game's interactions are pretty all-over-the-place. sometimes it's straight up ominous and well done, some times you stand on a bed in someone's hotel room while they stare at you after trying to beat you to death for barging in.

After about 40 hours played I must say getting accosted by a mugger has only happened twice and lasted about 20 seconds. But yes. Just don't fight them. You're a detective, not a vigilante!

But if you're DESPERATE to beat them up then lure them somewhere secluded and do it.

Also sounds like a simple fix. If npc getting smacked was mugger then bystanders call police.

We should teach the children to let the authorities handle such situations and the world will become perfect after as a result of this game.

Yeah, that's true. Exactly my first mugging experience. I was standing near murder scene on some street marking potential sniper positions and some guy approached me from behind and demanded money. I knew what's going on and my plan was to tell him "no" and just sprint away but it didn't work out - almost immediately I got stuck in some bench or trash can and mugger managed to hit me. That first hit gave me some debuff that disabled my sprint ability and I had no choice but to counter attack. I took the guy out but just a second later some random lady blasted me to death with her shotgun. Wtf.

That's the way lmao. My second mugging experience was telling the shmuck to gtfo and simply walking away. For two blocks that guy followed me - running close to my back, assuming fighting stance and by the time he was ready to strike I was already couple of steps away so he stood there for a second just staring at my back and then repeat the cycle. Hope he didn't jump into the ocean after that.

Game definitely needs some more nuanced NPC reactions. Right now they go straight from 0 to nuclear genocide. There should be some middle ground like trying to run away, sound the alarm, call for help from other NPCs, calling enforcers and so on. Would be also beneficial for current state of things where there is no consequences for player actions as long as they can bonk out the witness and leave the building.

What's just as bad is if you knock out the mugger and you're in the clear. So you go through their pockets to see who they are so you can stalk and break into their apartment later. Then when the mugger wakes up, while you're looking through their stuff, they run to the closest alarm that triggers turrets and aggros all the NPCs in the building.

Try not to get mugged in a basement.

Also, the double mugging situation sounds absolutely hilarious. I'm glad that player shared their experience cause that is pretty funny, bug or not.

I mean, get mugged. Fight back. Mobbed by NPCs. FAIL.
Player is like, wtf? Fine, I'll try again.
Load.
Pay mugger. Player is like, glad that's over even if it's not the outcome I would prefer.... Then immediately gets mugged again by the same guy. FAIL.
Perfect dystopia.

Seriously, it's like chef's kiss hilarious.

the vent systems are something out of a horror movie. always seem to go nowhere interesting or away from anywhere you want to go.

The NPCs literally do not know the difference. Also, running away is ostensibly the best option irl if the assailant happens to be a weak, inept, slow, poorly-motivated dope with a dinky little boxcutter. Nobody is John Wick; getting in hand-to-hand combat with anybody is a bad idea, let alone those who are holding a bladed weapon, no?

It's absolutely wacky, and there some things about the game that are annoying. There is massive issues with performance, such as 'rubber banding' around the city and there are some very genuine criticisms that one can make about the game.

That being said, if you allow yourself to get past those problems you will find a genuinely unique and engaging gameplay experience. The game does work and if you want play detective there isn't anything like this on the market. I found the game very frustrating at first but I'm glad I stuck with it, it's worth it.

I guess many people are used to hand crafted worlds and stories vs generally proc done ...
It can be so funny at times and that's the beauty of it. And on the proc gen stuff, you don't need to believe me but just imho one of the best out there with a relatively high level of coherence...
