Just started playing and first thing it tells me is that I miss "sleeping with sam"

in non tutorial games, there's no specific sam.

It also stated that the status icons would be able to show my status, I guess I thought there would be a tooltip there(in pause/desk mode), but no. (just got my first new status icon and no idea what it is (not the crouch one))

Indeed they are, finally figured that out, thanks.
I finished up the Tutorial then started a sandbox world, I'm pretty sure I'm a hobo now (kept the apt option off) and no Sam anymore. Fun game.

Judging by the clues left around the tutorial apartment, Sam is most likely your character's (ex-)partner. There's a bit of storyline in the tutorial, but not in sandbox mode, hence why Sam doesn't appear in the latter.

It's a gender-neutral name to indicate whatever kind of ex you'd like your grizzled detective to have lost.

Yeah you can find a lot of clues around the tutorial apartment on the protag's previous relationship. Sam is your Ex

i believe it was in a note and there were other identifiers

All the notes are kept specifically gender-neutral so you can fill in whatever blanks you want yourself

It was either a note or I had found his birth certificate along with my own (I think that was it)
I made another to try and find what it was so you would know I wasn't a troll, but I concede in this new gen I do not find any such evidence.

Furthermore, Sam Merriweather does not appear in the phone directory anymore, maybe he used to. Another possible is that if you find a link to Sams name, clicking it, brings up your own character, and mine says male and I probably wouldnt have double checked the name.

tl-dr: I cant find it anymore and concede it may be gone or perhaps I misread something.

Is it really that important anyway? It's just a tutorial storyline, and the only storyline in the whole game. It lasts all of a few minutes and you'll never deal with it again.
