Personally I do not take actions that break realism (like being extra aggressive with something knowing that I can just try again after a hospital visit). But I can see how it can be immersion breaking if you majorly fck up a plan and it all ends with a simple hospital visit.
I think that's what MountTai meant when they suggested adding an Ironman mode to prevent that. If you're not aware of the terminology, it essentially means a mode with one save and depending on the game, auto saves frequently. If you die/wipe/lose, it's the end of that file. (Though not applicable here, If a game has multiplayer, no trading allowed.)
I personally would love the feature.
There could be a difficulty option for more "realistic" hospital stays, where you lose a significant period of time.
The length of time can't be too long since the player will be forced to wait for it to simulate (another reason for it to be optional). But maybe a day, or at least one full sleep period, especially given that a hospital stay makes you energized and hydrated for a long time?
So if you get shot at a crime scene, you might lose a substantial chunk of time, and your chance to search for remaining evidence, which seems fair. You may miss a chance to catch the killer and have to wait for more clues.
