On the first victim's computer, you can find a V-mail conversation where the victim was worried, wanted to meet Kiara (this is the meeting that took place in the diner you investigated), and afterwards Kiara warned him in another V-mail to not open the door.
The way the case normally plays out, is that the killer shoots Kiara if you don't catch them fast enough. But if you're fast enough, then you can warn Kiara that the killer is out to get her, and she'll give you an extra reward.
Kind of funny that you ended up arresting the person that "hired" you. ;)
I'm not sure what exactly happened in your game, though. The "man in the diner" would be Onni Jonsson, the first victim. But you should have found him dead (and investigated him and his apartment) before you even found Kiara. Did you find a _second_ victim at 402 Novak House, or did you never go to investigate Onni Jonsson's apartment before looking for clues at the diner?
