So just completed the tutorial case. Thoughts.
Meh.. was just a identity hunt from the get go.. no motive.
Who hired the hired killer and why?
Hope that gets worked on a bit.
Also need more fine control over time passing.. ended up camping outside the flat of the killer and missed them..

I don't know how the randomization hits stuff, but I think I found more than you did. There was a business card + emails which expanded on but didn't fully explain what happened.
yeah mine had him being hire as a hitman plus his next targets

You can solve the case and miss out on a lot of the exposition which does make things seem kind of empty. I believe that's why the murders give 'optional' objectives, so that you try to turn every stone. Remember, the detective's role is to string the case together. Knowing ulterior motive can certainly help, but isn't always necessary. When and if you decide to play the sandbox, you're doing what amount to be morally ambiguous odd jobs for crows until a real murder investigation occurs. It's completely random. I've solved 4 lengthy side cases and haven't had a murder mystery pop up for me yet. A friend had one occur within 5 minutes of starting up his sandbox.

In my tutorial run, I found a burned a crumpled paper with a threat on it. Victim seemed to have been dipping their toes into some shady business, but didn't fully commit it to. The four leads take you all over the place. One of the letters in the apartment urged my tutorial playthrough to meet at an underground weapon's fence because he'd "need a piece". Another lead suggested that the victim had become involved with a coworker who was also hanging around questionable folks.

I think the beauty of it was that it left me asking questions, but I didn't feel slanted. I divulged enough of what had happened to form a realistic hypothesis of motive, but it wasn't spoon-fed to me. It was great. I hope when I encounter another murder that it plays out similarly.

you can find a lot of information depending where you look (Crumbled papers, notes, address books, citizen describing weird activities, emails, work places) this is the type of game that probably gets refined for years to come i don't see it leaving early access for 4-5 years with how ambitious it is lol.
I sat in the apartment of the killer and her wife because I was kinda waiting for one of them to leave the apartment so I could either follow her or arrest her when shes alone and they even started talking about it in their bedroom, where the wife asked her what was going on and what had happened etc ands the killer had what seemed like a mental breakdown.

It kinda fell apart when they started walking in circles in their appartment and turning the light on and off 20x in a row, but it was still a nice detail.
