Stalker Type killers are the wooooorst. XD
I have followed SO many false leads, and I keep coming up short.

All I have to go off of is ONE single fingerprint on a bugged floating syringe (suspicious)... Every other suspicious thing (the bouquet, the unreadable graffiti on the wall) has the victim's prints on them, not the killer...

After mistakenly accusing the victim's partner (syringe wasn't the murder weapon either), I finally found her diary that made me realize the killer is a stalker. It also gave me a height to go off of, and a location... Feeling clever, I hacked the CCTV outside the bar and tagged EVERY single face (despite nearly freezing to death like 4 times), discarding anyone who was too tall or too short. I end up with like 10 faces to check.

After a whole in game day of chasing leads, none of the most likely ones match the prints.

Then, the killer strikes again. Penthouse of my own apartment building, no less!

I grab the elevator and get there before the enforcers do, I barge into the apartment bowling over the the person in there and cuffing them before they can esca-.... Ah woops,
I just cuffed the most recent victim's *partner* .

Feeling foolish, I reload the save, and I instead ask to investigate. The guest pass *actually* makes it so that the enforcers don't throw me out, which is SUPER nifty!

Literally ZERO suspicious medication or syringes, no new prints...But I find another lead! The stalker's gender! I scrap 90% of the remaining previous leads, and am down to TWO names! ...STILL none of them match up with any of the prints.

I try to look for the building's security room to see if anyone was caught going in, WOOPS, there isn't one, the cameras are outsourced to somewhere I don't know...

I look around again, find a note saying "yo, stop messing with my mailbox!" and check it... Huzzah! New print!

I check the apartment again and find a V-Mail from the dating website (despite the victim literally having JUST bought a bouquet for her partner, so clearly something is up with this!), with a name! A quick trip to the government database tells me that they're a male of the right height! And lives in the same building!

I knock on his door and he's remarkably helpful!
I show him victim 1 "Yeah, that's my friend! I saw them at (Crime Scene building 1)".
I show him victim 2 "Yeah, that's my friend! I saw them at (Crime Scene Building 2)"

At this point, alarm bells are going off in my head and ask "Hey... Can I see your prints?"

He agrees! I have him! I HAVE the-

0_0

...The wrong prints.

It doesn't match up with AAAANNNYY of the suspicious ones.

Regardless, he HAS to be the guy! I close the door, and BARGE right in, cuff him, and start checking everything. ...No poison, no suspicious notes... Nothing. I could file the report regardless and hope I'm right, but... With no other evidence... I DOUBT this guy is my guy.

...I am starting to get to my wits end with this case. On one hand I love it, and I'm feeling like this guy is my own personal nemesis with how he keeps getting away...

On the other hand, this shows me why I should never be a cop. I have arrested the wrong person more than once, and crashed through more than one innocent person's door. XD

I am not fit for this job, lol.

for the freezing to death: coffee warms you up. keep one in your inventory, or a few even

Hence the name of the game. I haven't tried it but I don't think the game actually requires you to get the right person, just a reasonable person. I had a crime where Person A's prints were at the scene but all the potential murder weapon's had Person B's prints (A + B were a couple in the same house).

I imagined a situation where Person A gets the door open and then B rushes in and does the deed but who then do I pick? Person A was clearly at the scene of the crime but maybe Person B came by afterwards for the kill...

Shadows of Doubt indeed...

Yeah, I figured that out eventually.

There's at LEAST 6 empty coffee cups in that back alley next to Dragon Burger that I chugged in quick succession as I tried to get all that CCTV footage. XD

Stalkers/"Valentine killers" will also leave behind graffiti that gives their first initial. If it's unreadable at the crime scene, check newspapers to see if they've reported on the scene, as any wall writing will be spelled out in full there.

I had a case like this as well. The killer killed 5 before I reload the save, and wrote down all names in the city directory, and went to looking up all names in the data base. I had the killer prints but couldn't find him anywhere, until I matched the prints in the data base. It's now super easy to find the killers now with having all the people in the city directory's fingerprints. The only trouble that I have had lately is when I get a new case and the person that was murdered has their prints on the Company Card/Toy Car/Lipstick ETC..

With having the finger prints of the person that was murdered on the item of interest, it can be challenging to catch the right one. That's when if it was a company murder. I'll go back to the business, and get all of the records, and then go door to door of the people in the company until I find the right one that done it.

If it's a stalker that done it, I wish myself good luck at catching the right one until they slip up and leave their prints on the door, or leave the murder weapon at the scene.

I had the same floating object bug. It was a lipstick, which belonged to the victim's partner. It was irrelevant. I wasn't able to find any trace of the killer, and the building had no CCTVs. The evidence I got so far was that their intials began with A, he had black hair and average height (taken from the notes and letters) and had facial hair (questioning everyone who's nearby, including the victim's partner, will yield the same response of seeing someone suspicious, and will give their description).

So I reloaded a save shortly before the murder took place - and waited for the victim's killer to come to the apartment, curious to see who it is.

Perhaps the killer could sense I was nearby, so he went to kill someone else in a different building. This time, there was more evidence. There was CCTV footage, and I managed to catch the guy. I did have his profile on me from the government database, and none of the different fingerprints or footprints matched up the crime scene or the mailbox.

I just had the most HILARIOUS ending to this case.

A series of coincidences and hilarious bugs all at once.

So, while waiting for him to strike again (and waiting for a mark for a side gig to leave their apartment), I strolled into a shop I'd never visited before and took a look at their wares... And froze.

The general store was selling rat poison.

I ask the guy if he'd seen anything. "Oh yeah! Angry looking guy, average height..." (Alarm bells going off in my head) "I last saw him at 501 Gomez house, 7 AM".

I check my watch. It's 9 AM. The killer may still be in the building!

I RUN up the steps, note the nearby CCTV with a grin, thinking "If he's already struck, I'll have his FACE!" and just as I'm knocking on the door... "HELP, ENFORCERS!!" and the gate starts coming down. I knock even more frantically.

Tenant opens the door. I ask to be let in to check the scene and get a guest pass so that when the enforcers show up, they won't shoot at me...

FINALLY get a good graffiti that gives me the killer's initials! And MORE prints, confirming the one at the first crime scene! And more footprints! The killer got sloppy! >:D

And Just as I turn to look at the office I see...

A man stuck in the filing cabinet. I interact with it to try to get him to talk, he starts to run. I get a snap of his face and he starts to attack me.

I clobber him, check his pockets... AHA! POISON! And a Syringe! And his wallet with his address and his full name starting with his matching initials, AND his prints line up!

It took SO many days, and 3 deaths, but I FINALLY got the guy! Because I just happenned to stroll into the right shop at the right time, and the killer somehow got stuck in some drawers. Not only did he get sloppy, he got buggy! XD

(Needless to say, as some extra catharsis, I kicked down his door and robbed him blind. He won't be needing any of that where he's going.)
