What is throwing coins used for?

I would guess it's intended to be used as a distraction, 'hey go look over there', but when I tried NPCs completely ignored it. Do you have to throw it in their line of sight or what? I know you can throw it at their face to make them homocidally angry with you to chase you around, but I suspect that's not the main intended use case.

Ive never got them to work personally

they do aggro npcs though i dont know why

I don't think they're working atm. It does actually cost you a crow to throw one though, so if you got too much money, you can try literally throwing it away.

It must have worked at one time because I watched a "50 tips" video on Youtube for this game, and they demonstrated the coin effectively distracting an NPC.
