Slowdown fix for Nvidia users and possibly AMD
Disable threaded optimization in the program setting of "Manage 3D Settings" option on the left pane of options.

For AMD users, I would reccomend opening task manager with the game open (so alt + tab and ctrl + alt + del) go to details, find the game exe; right click it. Set affinity is what you are looking for, disable all cores aside from 1 core "CPU 0". This game was made in a time when hyperthreading and multicore processors weren't really common. Hope this helps the game to stop running like a slideshow.

What is the "slowdown" you're referring to?

It was an issue ingame to do with an option in the Nvidia driver control panel that slowed the whole game down to around 2FPS.

Thanks for the reply. Now if I could only figure out why the game suddenly stopped wanting to run in full screen as of the showers (see my other thread). I thought it was the Tagès stuff causing it but it's not that because I "acquired" the GOG version as a test and the same thing happens: when I start the game, the whole picture is horizontally squished with black above and below. I go to the video options and my 1440p resolution is already selected. But if "full screen" is on and I hit apply, nothing changes. And when I leave the options the game just hangs.

If I set full screen to off, I can even use my 2560*1440 res, but the taskbar appears below, which is annoying but at least I can play.

You could always set the task bar to hidden ? May not be a fix but a little workaround :-)
