SOR4 looks like a cartoon because of thick black outlines on the characters
Please update the graphics for this game with option to have characters with no overly thick black outlines.

If you got rid of the cartoonish thick black outlines the character art style would look a lot less cartoonish and more similar to the realistic sprite style of the original streets of rage games or the high quality sprites in the king of fighters games. These thick black outlines are the main reason streets of rage 4 gets criticism for looking like a "flash" game/cartoon in my honest opinion.

Pause the video below at 2:41 and look at the 4 blaze (female character) drawings starting from the top left with very little or no black outlines (how the art style should have looked in streets of rage 4 imo), it looks more similar to the realistic sprite style of the original streets of rage games or the high quality king of fighters sprites. Now compare the default streets of rage 4 blaze drawing with thick black outlines second from the bottom left, it looks a lot more cartoonish than the top row with little to no black outlines.

Compare the sprites from SoR 4-

to these from KoF 8. Notice how the sprites have very thin or almost no black outlines and more color shades that makes them look more 3d/realistic.

The thick black outlines on the sor 4 characters remind me of these cartoons

You say this looks like Flash but then you site two of the best-looking cartoons from Cartoon Network's renaissance era for comparison, which aren't Flash. Why didn't you site Teen Titans Go, which does use Flash?

I have never seen a flash game that looks this good

I used flash to described the art style not the animation. If you look at a screenshot from dexter's lab and teen titans go they look very similar, and they were the first examples i though of when thinking of characters/cartoons drawn with overly thick black outlines.

I have never seen a streets of rage game that looked like a cartoon. This new cartoonish art style is an abomination and out of place for the SoR series imo. The backgrounds look nice it's just the characters that look cartoonish.

Do you know the history and insane work behind those KOF sprites? If not, go look into it and you'll quickly realize why they went with hand drawn art and not 3D models redrawn into 2D sprites.

I think what gives the characters the cartoon look is the overly thick black outlines rather than the actual sprites. Pause this video at 2:41 and look at the 4 blaze drawings starting from the top left with very little or no black outlines, it almost looks like snk style sprites. Now compare the default sor 4 blaze drawing with thick black outlines starting from the bottom left, it looks a lot more cartoonish than the top row with little to no black outlines.

If they got rid of the cartoonish thick black outlines the character art style would look much better and similar to the realistic sprite style of the original sor games.

i agreed with some things of yours. but your overthinking it to an extend where you look for negativity in everything. thats totally unnecessary. u will miss out on a great game

I feel you 100%, Duke. If I had a choice between what we got and the KOF style, I'm choosing the KOF style every time. I'm just saying the budget isn't there which is why we got what we got. I don't mind the art of SoR4, I play beat em ups heavy and have seen far worse.

Hell, if I could choose I would go with the method used in Gran Blue Versus or Guilty Gear as Arksys are amazing at creating 2.5D. We have to prove to Sega that the series needs a bigger budget if they ever do a new one which is why sales numbers count.

Yezzir. I'm just a big SoR fan so I will take what I can get and what I got is better than what I would have expected. See: Sonic 4 and Double Dragon IV. Those games were horrible lol.

i hope that your dreams will come true and that perhaps they will upscale the existing pixelated cast. i truly do. it would look nice

I think the backgrounds in particular have a nice comic book feel to them personally, yeah the graphics look cartoony but I wouldn't say it looks like a flash game, that implies lazyness with the art but the backgrounds and everything has lots of details and attention put into them.

That said, I really do wish they stuck with pixel art, sonic mania did a fantastic job in that regard.. Or even better let us switch between old and new graphics on the press of a button.

I get what you're saying OP but at the same time I still think the art style looks great even if it is different, they've clearly put a lot of details into the backgrounds, the animations and so forth, looks nice imo
