Nope. Stay with the Microsoft version. You can play with xbox players and if you have an xbox, you can play on that as well. One game, one purchase, two systems. Steam can only play with Steam users.

The Steam version can be played with up to 4 people with just one copy.
The Steam version is up to date more often.
The Steam version is less likely to give you trouble.
The Steam version can be modded, dunno about the MS Store one.

In the Steam version the user data is saved in three files:

/users/steamuser/My Documents/Streets of Rage 4 Save and Config/

Config.txt
Save.bin
Save.temp,bin

If yours is somewhat similar there's a chance that they are interchangeable. You should ask in the Technical Questions and Issues sub-forum, developers are quite active over there.

The problem with buying from the Microsoft Store is it makes it's own folders in whatever drive you set it to. Those folders are locked behind MS's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ security so you can't even access the files to mod them.

Yeah, I heard people had a lot of trouble fixing NieR:Automata when it came to the Game Pass since the game is basically unplayable for a lot of people unless you mod it.

I've tried to take full control of the folders and MS will not allow it
