For instance, there are 3 civil developer infrastructure specialization levels in a colony. Expert, Master, and Legendary. You can get +1, +2, or +3 RP (research points) per population in the colony depending on how high you level it up there. Of course, you might level something else instead. This is where those research points you are seeing in the research screen as Infrastructure Specialization are coming from.
Infrastructure also boosts production in general, no matter what specialty you pick upon level up, and provides a nice bonus to some other aspect of your colony ontop of the research bonus. I'd advise everyone not to underestimate the power of building up your infrastructure.
That's correct. There are also data core artifacts, and even event bonuses that can appear here.
It is important to note though that all of those are listed as separate line items from the Infrastructure Specialization line item in the research tooltip for each area.
On the game startup screen there are race bonuses displayed, did you check if what you're seeing was there?
What do the bonus descriptions say when you hover over it in the research screen? Most of the stats in the game show where that's coming from.
Or do you mean some of the planet's infrastructure slots are already unlocked when you first start the game?
Each race has specific preset infrastructure specializations.
They do help guide your early research along with the government type.
They help guide you in other ways as well.
For instance the Moltar start with level 2 infrastructure specilization in planetary engineering. Notice their unique ability is unlocked when they reach level 3 (Legendary Planetary Engineers) in planetary engineering in a colony. Ontop of that, havjng 3 points in planetary engineering on a planet provides a +25% bonus to planetary engineering efforts empire wide. This makes adding a 3rd point there early highly beneficial. It also means they have strong support ships to help eco-engineer and terraform new colonies.
The Draguul on the other hand start with a more aggressive infrastructure setup focused on ship support and ship building. This combined with their unique abilities and traits make them good early conquerers in my experience.
Each race can be played a number of ways, but they are certainly well suited to certain playstyles.
If you have a support ship on the system and planetary engineering infrastructure perks unlocked in the empire you will see a boost to planetary engineering on the Habitat Control tooltip, for example, the terraforming action tooltip or any other eco-engineering or terraforming action tooltip as long as there's production allocated to planetary engineering activities.
