Because "close to 1.0" menas the whole way the game is in EA, there wont be dedicasted servers and this will be a long time (may be several years). and for this time its like "no server".
So, they could potentially sell a lot more copies of this game, but without dedicated servers, it's impossible. Many games have had dedicated servers from their beginning, so why not?
Foundry has been available on Itch.io for many years, like at least 4 years. So yeah, it's time for them to make dedicated servers available.
We play at different times and timezones as well as getting together for joint fun.
These days we are starting to avoid multiplayer if only coop as it simply does not allow us to multi play.
Game already looking good though.
Wish you the best.
No dedicated server, no buy.
There's no way this is playable at scale off a friend's PC unless he has NASA CPU budget. Dedicated server, even if wonky, should have been available considerably sooner.
Yeah i was wondering about that too because no way i can run a game server in addition to the game on my pc, did a quick google search and it seems they already have an official partner where you can rent a server on launch.

As for the server helping with performance: The game is simulated deterministically on each client and a server is not helping you to reduce the load. This type of architecture ensures a smoother multiplayer experience, especially once the factories get large.
Running the server on the same machine as your game will cost more resources (especially RAM), but if you have enough cores on your CPU it shouldn't be significant.
This is cool, I'm looking foward to play this game with my friends.
Count me in. Thanks for implementing dedicated servers! :)
