Deep ore mining is too late in the game
I feel that either starter ore veins run out too quickly. The infinite deep veins come so late in the game that pretty much everything has been done and they're only good for the mega factories that relatively few player would be building.

I've got to tier 4, have run out of accessible ore and quite frankly CBA to bring ore up from 120 m deep using explosives and elevators.

What are the chances of getting a setting to increase the density of starter veins to give some of us (me!) time to build more spaghetti ?

It didn't take more than a couple deposits of each type to complete the tech tree...deep ore mining is only necessary for one kind of ore and you won't need to start fracking, even.

It's easier to get down than with explosives.
Take the scanner and look for a wire. For example, if it says 250-75-300, build a passenger elevator nearby and have it dig a new floor on level 75. You're already at the right height and all you have to do is blow something up around the vein for the freight elevator and the drones. You can easily get the electricity down using the passenger elevator.

The developers have already stated that they plan to let you set ore levels in a future update if you wish to do so. On saying that like you I was running out but bit the bullet and set up elevators after watching a few videos on YouTube. Once you have done one it becomes easy. Give it a go.

Well, I can't say that I have a shortage of ore...there is enough. Use the scanner and you will find enough. That gives you enough to explore upwards and use the fracking method...then there will be endless resources anyway.

You kind of missed the point of my post here. I'm well aware of fracking, but by the time you unlock it you've pretty much finished the game. I have more resources scanned, but they're too deep to be easily accessible without unlocking elevators etc, at which point my starter nodes are running out,

Anyway, as has been said in this thread, the ability to change ore running out in a future patch

I know exactly what you are talking about!!! I just gave up on my 22nd game because of lack of xeno-ferro stuff. I was just building science pack 3 this time. Have gotten as far the elevator, but no resources to build the damn thing! Bigger deposits or a pause feature or both would be helpful in my case I think. I have found remote deposits but they are too far away to do any good, and of course there is no ignium around to power anything.

There are a few things you can do to alleviate the issue, gameplay things, that you should have been doing anyway.
The first science packs require you to automate your belts, that is in part to tell you, automate your belts. They do the same with those foundational blocks. The idea is that from the very beginning of the game, you will know to produce as many as you need.
You get logistics containers pretty early in the tech tree. Once you have those, you have a container you automatically fill with your belts, and you have a container that you automatically fill with foundation blocks.
Now, from shortly after initial science pack production, you have all the belts and foundation you need to tap those deposits that are farther away. If the closest ones are too deep and you don't want to deal with it, that's fine, you can keep searching until you find more surface deposits.
Then you can hook up those mines right away and have the increased supply available.
No more problem.

I deal with the depletion of my starter veins (which unforunately tends to be well before I can do long distance transport), by finding the nearest alternative node, sinking a mine shaft, and then routing the material (maybe after some initial processing) back to my main hub on a looong belt or two. I haven't had any issues doing this with ~3 runs to the end of the tech chain or close to it that I've done.

I'm curious at to what's in store for future releases, because right now I don't even need to use the blast smelter's since I have plenty of material to support my base. However, I'm looking forward to scaling things up even further down the line.

air intake bases is also too far away from the point where you can build fracking towers and unable to fulfill them.
I ran into situation where I consumed all nearby ore nodes and closest veins lol before I was able to make liquid for fracking towers.
