What is a foundation? one of the blocks? I cant figure ware to put the research station things.

The basic power floor block is a foundation. Every Machine needs a foundations to get power to it. So the same blocks you been using for everything else.

"Building Platform" = Foundation = An item you craft by hand or a machine from xenoferrite plates + technum rods. Game has an extensive guide book build within, press F1 and read.

And notice those white buttons with symbol "i" in them around the user interface? Those are information tool-tips, hover your mouse on top and receive information about what how and where...

And all this is very clearly stated within the game multiple times... you just need to listen.
