Switch smelters to Tier 2?

I just researched the thing to make Tier 2 plates and pipes. They show in my build menu but they require a smelter. However, I can't see how I switch my smelters to make Tier 2. The panel still shows Tier 1. Are they just smelting faster and I can't tell?

Yes they just smelt faster. Thst is the only change I could see.

You need to use the refined ore, not rubble. Send the rubble through a crusher first, it converts 2 rubble into 1 refined ore (you'll need to set the recipe); then send that refined ore to the smelter and it will automatically use the tier 2 smelting recipe.

Note that you'll have to empty out/use up all of the rubble in the smelter first before it can start accepting the refined ore. I would recommend manually removing any rubble in the inventory rather than waiting for it to get used up, since you can add it to the crusher too.
