Unlock the "Ability upgrade slot" is kind of useless too, do the math. One skill takes 132 hours 25 minutes from start to finish, assuming no time between which will never happen but just on the numbers, that time for 20 skills is 110 days 8 hours so less than 4 months with ONE skill upgrade slot. and then they are useless forevermore. That is for EVERY skill, I'm at 10 on several skills on all regular characters my main has one skill at 6 and the rest higher, I've only have been playing for about a month and only used one upgrade slot.
The Companions from the tavern ARE basically useless, unless you want to stack companion heals for a tough battle, but that's not happening any time soon.
I never want to let my gems drop below about 200 because if "I NEED 200 NOW!!!" i don't want to have to suspend everything else to go and farm.
CRAFTING is a good way to spend Gems and also GLORY points, work on your crafting, it will pay off. Don't believe me? Check out the trinkets you can make. I hope you are salvaging every item you can instead of selling for gold, gold is easy "Marks of Titan" are not, and you need them for HIGH end crafting.
Refresh the recipe vendor whenever you can and get the 50.000 gold one each time assuming you have the cash, even if you don't think you'll need it you might some day, remember gold is easy.
SET PIECES you can get from drops but also from CRAFTING, there is one set that costs 100 Glory on each class and the rest are bought from the vendor. You can drop the level and the quality from Legendary to Epic and below to drop the crafting costs, which drops stats but if you don't have the mats...... also if you craft them you get to pick the stats.
The consumables trader takes gems for buff items, the Weapons and Armor trader also takes gems but again not really worth it.
You get 3 character slots and the next 2 cost gems. Also I'm not seeing any point in spending 50 gems to destroy a character I've spend time on, nice to know it's there but what is the point?
ALSO make sure to get in on the Temp character event it costs no gems to join. You can try out new builds, different classes and different farming/playing styles. PLUS!!!! you get double XP which counts towards your overall crafting XP ranking instantly. Crafting is cheap and the low end gem farming is amazing! At the end of the event all the items you picked up, all the mats, all the gold and character XP goes to your main and don't worry about maxing out the temp character's skills just have fun.
AND if you have an item that grows with the character like the cloak you can move the item to a LOW level and pay 6 gems to put in a socket! instead of hundreds.
I thank you a lot for your extensive answers.
They're also good to buy Boosters at any time to help farm what you want (XP for Champ Levels, Gold for all the many things Gold is sucked up by). I personally don't recommend buying Gem packs as you'll get tons of low-rank gems to transmute with farming boosters while running a profitable location like Mission 47 on Normal over and over.
Buying additional Companions is good if you're running specific builds for Trials, like the ELR/GMC Frostfire Mage, which benefits greatly from having 3 Healers with which to Vortex mobs together when you cast Ray of Frost each time it's off CD.
If you haven't unlocked a whole lot of recipes from the Vendor and know for certain there are specific ones you desire for set items, you can spend Gems to get them quicker, as this can make a huge difference in your playstyle.
Things not to spend Gems on: Special chests in Missions, equipment sold by the Dwarf in town.
