Yes, large parties *sound* fun. But balancing the game around them would destroy the gameplay for anything smaller than the maximum size.
EDIT: In regards to the OP; yea, those were NPCs. You occasionally fight alongside those. You also have access to summons.
The extra difficulty is where the game's progression systems comes in. Better decks, better gear, consumable, etc. I know it's hard to take the word of some random dude on the internet, but I can 100% guarantee you that you are underestimating have badly additional characters would make the game fall apart. No content for 3 characters would ever present any challenge for 4, no matter how difficult. And any content the gave challenge to 4 characters would be possible to beat with 3.
I recognize that the idea is really compelling. But the devs would essentially have to create two parallel games, with completely different card and item balance for each. I'd prefer them to focus their resources on the things they have planned currently. More acts, more characters, gauntlet mode, etc. All that would have to be put on hold in order to create a secondary game mode that wouldn't be able mesh with the real game.
