It's not exactly a pure deck building formula as we throw in many other RPG mechanics in the mix, like being able to equip items that can modify or add new skills, a talent system that improves your character in select ways, as well as being able to craft and modify items to better fit your build.
This is just the tip of iceberg and we have more mechanics in future iterations of the game, but that's the gist of it.
1) You choose a class (5 to choose from if I recall correctly)
2) You choose a role (3-4 different roles)
The above gives you the pre-built deck to start.
3) While playing, you will be finding gear (which may have an attached card that gets added to the deck while you wear the gear) and leveling up skills (which include but are not limited to cards from available roles above).
If you want to play a hunter that focuses on traps, you can. If you want to instead focus on sharpshooting, you can. If you want to play a rogue type character than focuses on assassination and stealth, you can...or if you want him to focus on deception and illusion, you can.
You get to decide if you want to focus on a role or just go "jack-of-all-trades" and this is done by adding 1 card to the deck at a time via #3 above. If you don't like a card you picked up (which WILL happen), you have a few ways to REMOVE that card from the deck to streamline it.
Deck building is only 1 part of the game. There's tactics and role playing as well. It's one of the best TCG's I've ever played and that's my primary interest. I've been playing TCG's for over 10 years now, and have played well over 40-50 different TCGs. This one DEFINITELY ranks in the top 3 IMO. There's A LOT to do here already, and it's still early access. Crazy.
This is more of a deckbuilding with an RPG twist, that's why i got into it in the first place, as i don't like classic pure deckbuilding games. Classes, character stats, equipment etc. makes it feel more like a light RPG with cards. You won't be disappointed.
You should try Steamworld Quest if you want deck building and characters.
Still, if you aren't into card games, there are more RPG's than you could possibly finish within a human lifespan that do not include them.
The game is amazing and everything else is great. I think you'll like it if you can ignore the RNG on skills.
the only rng to skills is with some that create skills in hand. nunless refering to when you addd a card to deck then there is thhe rng related to one of three skills (though those skills are taken from a pool of 20ish cards at the fullest cardpool possible with some of the pools you draw from only being four (and fate lets ya re-roll)
i will admit that it is annoying getting all the variety since many of the pools are pretty meh or only to be taken if your going for one card and you have the fate to roll-out or if you wanna take a tier 3 draw and the pool is small enough that your guarented the skill you want (elementalist is painful for the fate ive spent trying for one damn elemental trait rather than the others)
Another issue is the price - deckbuilders are generally cheap genre, 10$ top for a finished game. There is no logical reason why this one costs more, aside from that its quite pretty.
