Skill Books?

I keep hearing about these so called "Skill books" but have never actually seen any evidence as to their existence in the current version. Where do I find them? What do they look like? How does one 'read' the book to learn the part/trick/etc?

I found one in a weird puzzle in castle town. The one I found was a light blue book with a hammer on the cover, and prompted me to left click it.

Now having done the puzzle in the castle town and gotten the book, I left clicked it and apparently learned a recipe I already knew. Is it random or is it meant to do that?

I got one from the adventurer that did the same thing. I'm guessing they can unlock parts for the shop?
