This is a post to get Steam Deck users started playing, based on my experience. The purpose is to clearly, kindly, and in easy detail, help those with performance issues.

Locked at 30fps?

Go to Settings -> Gameplay -> Lock FPS to 30. Uncheck this box and viola.

Game crashes consistently

Go to Settings -> Graphics -> Advanced -> change DX12 to DX11. Reboot the game.
This helped significantly BUT I’m still getting crashes. The Ascent seems to really not like you pausing and leaving the Deck on sleep mode. You should quit the game entirely when done to prevent crashing.


Whether or not my graphics settings changed anything I’m uncertain. Defaults were changed from Ultra to High. Under Steam’s performance mode I had locked FPS to 60.

For Sabertooth lore, I am trying to centralize helpful info for the games I play so you don’t have to parse through people being rude, people with middle school writing levels, and solutions found via comments. Please do not comment to say “wow it’s so obvious this is how you could’ve fixed it.” Nobody cares.

Just run ASCENT yesterday again (my old 19 lvl save) and got absolutely unplayable 0.25 FPS after the load. Reinstalled game, reloaded Steam Deck doesn't help. Started new game - all is fine, untill you finish the prologue. The moment you get to the upper town (enter lift from first underground area) those 0.25 FPS is here. In the underground area it runs quite smooth.
What to do ?

I'll try to be as precise as I can about the issues i am having. Crashing during game play or from menu is common for me now. Wish I had RMA my deck over one year ago as i didnt have problems to badly until Valve's forced updates for other builds I'm not using, but that is something entirely different. Problems I am encountering on SD:
1. The mouse does not work. Only during the splash screen upon start up of game is mouse usable. no time after this. It seems as if the Devs did not intend to have KB&M usable to those with both. This is apparent when reading the tutorials in codex for movement by keyboard as its say " move using Blank " and yet it states that to aim high with mouse, " click and hold RMB" WTF?
2. Keyboard works for a few hot keys. WSADctrlTAB M I O and a few other keys but no button to roll. If you use the keyboard while in menu an get back out to game, you lose focus of controller/s and can no longer get them to work (aside from Steam buttons working) blocking you from playing as only KB now works. Also, if you try to swap the controller priority using the ellipse button (3 dots) or steam+A button on gamepad, this also does not work. in fact you can see a brief pause before the controllers displayed in priority 1. Xbox S gamepad 2. Steamdeck controller 3. etc. where it glitches to what should display a third HID but quickly warps away only to show your current controllers.
3. For some time now I have come to realize that (this is with any game! not just The Ascent) if you push a certain combo or macro if you will, of buttons on an 3rd party gamepad (PS, Xbox, PC, not sure about switch, Logitech, 8BitDo, etc) you can while playing live, REMAP the controls in that they -lock up most but not all buttons. SO, RGHT TRG, LFT TRG, bumpers - anything that you desperately need to hit but do not function. Sometimes, I am able to unlock them IF i figure out what buttons together locked them in the first place. You might have encountered this if you have custom config. buttons on games for things like toggle crouch or toggle aim because those games do not support that ability in game to work natively. Such consequences can occur with unexpected control mechanics. For example: Attempting to config a toggle on Saints row 3 for ADTS will cause the cars to be unable to stop gassing FWD/RVS much to my horror while playing a mission trying to get away from gangs shooting at me. You can walk using CtrL+WSAD keys on keyboard and mouse but it is IMPOSSIBLE to set a toggle to allow controllers to take advantage of this feature, so if you ever have played Saints row 3 with a gamepad, running up escape ladders are a nightmare because you cannot stop your character from running and will run off them constantly. Sometimes this can be counter acted to turn off temp. using something like Hold RGHT TRG and then tap X or whatever key/button you have toggled. This RE-MAP will also happen even if you dont' do anything to reconfig your controls using Steam as well. In Maniac, there is a bug that while using the astronaut with gravity gun and hitting a combination of the main buttons will case you adopt your melee weapon to your main weapon , effectively re-mapping your LFT TRIG to your RGHT TRIG so that both buttons will use the same thing.. this is also possible to do while in a vehicle as well. until you quit and relaunch the game.
Sorry, I know i said id try and be precise and brief about these issues but i thought i would give as much details as i could in my XP using Steam Deck. If you have had similar issues, YOU R NOT ALONE

ps. The mouse not working also has happened to straight PC Steam users as well but % is its rare to happen on The Ascent. In controls- in settings- controls are displayed for Seam Deck ONLY! no remapping, no other configs, no alternatives to Steam Deck controls. It has been suggested if you have more then one HID plugged in or wirelessly connected, cause's error's with the game. Funny, Couch Co op can use 2 gamepads at the same time, but cannot have a second -backup controller- connected to Steam Deck.
