The Ascent

Game reboots my computer.
I can play The Ascent for about 20 minutes to an hour, but eventually it shuts my PC down and forces a reboot. The Ascent is the only game I've encountered that I have this problem with. I don't overclock my hardware, all temperatures are within normal range, and my voltages are fine too.

Is there anybody else with the same problem? Not looking for tech support, and the bugs & issues thread is locked, so I'm just curious if others are experiencing a similar issue.

well, if not heat (it is clean inside, right ?) or energy spikes force your bios to do a "safety"restart, especially if it happens under the same circumstances again and again, something critical is messed up, maybe never noticed cause never stressed before in that way. this could be something like an error in windows (try clean reinstall), some driver issues or in worst case some fatal damaged stuff like ram, cpu, gpu or on the mainboard itself. sometimes it is just trivial like energy managment in bios/windows.

so far like always in this situations, step by step checking your system and a lot of trial and error...

What PSU do you have and whats the aprox TDP for your system?
KAISERNEON Aug 11, 2021 @ 5:54pm
I'm running an EVGA G3 750W PSU, and using a 1080 GTX on an i7 7700k CPU desktop. My TDP should be around 500-600w at max load. I'm going to keep investigating and try to find the underlying cause of this, because it's an unusual situation for sure.

I found a lead on the issue using Windows Event Viewer. Every time my computer reboots during The Ascent, it's right before I get a "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued." error that's related to storachi. Generally speaking, it appears I'm having an issue with my storage. I'm starting to suspect it has to do with The Ascent's autosave feature and being installed on an SSD. It's hard to narrow down the issue further because there's a lot of possibilities here.

Have you tried checking Event Viewer?

https://www.howtogeek.com/123646/htg-explains-what-the-windows-event-viewer-is-and-how-you-can-use-it/

Usually, you'll find the problem. Just look for the approx time your system crashed and see what caused it on the log.

Nvm. You got it. Check errors on your storage device?

Try disabling "Steam overlay while in-game"

Right click the game - properties - and make sure there's no check mark.

This fixed a few other games that were doing the same thing for me.

Hope it helps.

Okay, so I followed all the common solutions to the problem I mentioned earlier, an event 129 "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued" error, and somewhere along the way I think I managed to fix it.

I started with a check disk scan and repair procedure on the drive I have Ascent installed, changed my SATA mode from AHCI to another option in bios (for my mobo the alternative is Intel RST), turned off fast startup in Windows, disabled write caching on all my SSDs, and finally checked the power management settings to ensure my SSDs are always active and the PCIe port power management is disabled. For good measure, I reinstalled the game to another drive (which might be just what actually fixed it, lol) and so far I've experienced no sudden reboots. For reference, I followed several of the OS/hardware specific steps in this guide:
https://appuals.com/fix-reset-to-device-deviceraidport0-was-issued/

Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate it. I hope this thread helps anybody else who suffers the same obscure problem.

I had a similar issue of getting a disk error when trying to update. I checked the hard drive for errors, I performed the suggestions Steam provided, but it still wouldn't cure the problem.

Then I wondered if the problem was me installing the game to an external hard drive connected via USB 3.0. So I deleted the game from that drive, and installed it on an internal hard drive directly connected to the motherboard, and THAT resolved the issue.

No disk error and I was able to update the game.
