Seedling tray
i think the seedling tray is kind of pointless its a 7 tile building that needs fertiliser to store saplings, but if i use 3 crates each 3 high i take up 6 tiles and store 300 tree seeds. unless im missing something its more efficient to use crates.

The trees grow faster with the seedlings

Yeah it's pretty pointless. I guess you don't really have another use for fertilizer but it's not necessary to grow trees faster. You can just mark a new area. When i first heard of the seedling tray i thought it would be like a plant pot for trees. You would feed the tray with fertilizer to grow the tree faster.

Would that not be better? I know i'd prefer it this way because it's more interesting than a speed boost and only one extra step.

Im not upto this stage in the game yet but i would assume they are partly grown within the Seedling Tray and the fert probs makes it quicker to grow

apparently its 50% faster but you need a lot of more advanced items to build it so by the time you unlock it you already have a large amount of things relying on wood automation already, so it seems pointless to change it for a 50% growth bonus.

I found it really useful, seedlings grow twice as fast as planted tree seeds, I've been playing pretty tall (whole tree zone is no bigger than one mk2 bot area) and it makes it really efficient, 6 seedling trays feed the area fast enough to maintain fully stocked logs, planks, poles and fixing pegs. I'm pretty certain I could streamline it more than I have but I'm happy with the rhythm I have.

I guess the idea is giving you the chance to minimise excessive numbers of bots and figure out some streamlined systems, boils down to personal preference i guess since you can easily solve the same problem a dozen different ways.

btw, fertilizer was crucial for corn crops I found, especially in combo with tilling and watering, since maintaining enough flour and porridge coming in for higher tier meals was tricky.

i wonder how many extra bots your using for those seedling trays, compared to my tree farm that doesn't use them. as you say its down to personal preference so i cant say the way your doing it is wrong, i just wish the benefit was more than a simple 50% speed boost.

Why do you need 6 seedling trays? They hold like 150 saplings. It's basically a storage box...

i needed 6 at first because I collapsed my wood building economy at one point, I then kept them pre-empting whatever's coming next.

numbers wise I repurposed a few basic bots, 2 per tray (one seeding one fertilizing) then 1 mk2 collecting seedlings from 3trays sequentially. This supports 8 mk2s (4cutting, 4 digging).

It it excessive definitely, I switched off 3 trays but if you're building a lot of new stuff the 6 maintains a steady supply even with the extra demand.

So 28 altogether, not using 10 of them rn, and after a checked an old savefile I was using 16 total so using 2 more bots in fact but keeping a much steadier supply.

maybe I'm too keen but I'm happy with my set up, (dunno coal obv) but the only thing I'm potentially gonna struggle maintaining for the next stage is rough stone.
